COLLEGE BASKETBALL: OU’s Hamilton honored with Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Oakland’s Reggie Hamilton was named the 2012 Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award recipient, announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Thursday. This award is given annually to one senior, 6-foot-and-under, who thrived in the classroom and on the basketball court.
“Reggie Hamilton is one of the premier scorers in college basketball,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. “The combination of his success on the court, and his achievements in the classroom as a student-athlete, make him a deserving recipient who exemplifies the qualities this award is designed to celebrate.”
Hamilton, a Mid-Major All-American, led the country in scoring with just over 26 points per game and will become the first-ever Summit League player to win a scoring title. The 5-foot-11 point guard has scored a league-record 919 points so far this season and his 17 30-point games is most by any player in the NCAA Division I. Hamilton has scored 29 or more points in 10 straight games and he has the Golden Grizzlies in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
Some of the past recipients of this award include Jacob Pullen (K-State, 2011), Dee Brown (Illinois, 2006), Earl Boykins (Eastern Michigan, 1998), Tyus Edney (UCLA, 1995), Tony Bennett (Green Bay, 1992) and Tim Hardaway (UTEP, 1989).
