Auburn Hills Oakland Christian

HEAD COACH: Chuck Snyder, sixth season.

LEAGUE TOURNAMENT FINISH: Fourth at MIAC league meet (59 points).

FINAL LEAGUE FINISH: Fourth at MIAC league meet (59 points).

NOTABLES: With a small band of 12 athletes last spring, the Lancers were still able to muster top-five finishes at the league and regional. With a small and unproven squad once again, minus some quality losses to graduation, and it’s hard to tell just how well Oakland Christian will fair against other small schools in the area.

Clarkston

HEAD COACH: John Yorke, fifth season.

2011 RECORD: 3-3-0, 3-3-0 OAA Red Division.

LEAGUE TOURNAMENT FINISH: Sixth at OAA Red Division league met (50 points).

KEY LOSSES: Caitlyn Post (middle distance); Laura Smokoska (throws), Zhane Lyons (sprints), Kacy Robinson (sprints), Gillian Ward (sprints).

NOTABLES: Clarkston is back on the rise after a couple of down years and should be in the thick of the OAA Red Division race, along with Adams and Rochester. The Wolves could also be a threat to win the regional. What makes Clarkston talented is that it has quality performers in each event that bodes well in a dual setting, but also has a core of 8-9 athletes that can rack up points at the larger meets.

NOTABLES: Lake Orion graduated back-to-back senior classes loaded with talent, leaving this team in a rebuilding mode. The Dragons are the type of team that will benefit from competing in the OAA Red Division, which will prepare them for the regional and county meets with a young squad.

HEAD COACH: Greg Hyde.

2011 RECORD: 6-2, 6-2 Flint Metro League.

LEAGUE TOURNAMENT FINISH: Third at Flint Metro League meet (68 1/5 points).

KEY NEWCOMERS: Kelly Hamilton, fr.; Paige Arney, fr.; Madee Pierce, fr.; Taylor Rieves, fr.; Monica Pittiglio, fr.

KEY LOSSES: Rachel Gibson (jumps, sprints); Brianna Lung (jumps).

NOTABLES: This could be one of Brandon’s better teams this season, with an explosives group of big-meet sprinters, adequate field events personal and up-and-coming distance crew. Expect this team to challenge for a league title and also score its fair share of points at the county and regional and even the D-1 state finals. The best part of this group that there is very few seniors that will be contributing at the larger meets.

Oxford

HEAD COACH: Bob Blunk, second season.

2011 RECORD: 3-0-1, 3-0-1 OAA White Division (had one meet cancelled).

LEAGUE TOURNAMENT FINISH: Third at OAA White Division meet (77.5 points).

COUNTY FINISH: 14th (21 points).

NOTABLES: Oxford felt the blow when a handful of athletes opted not to return this season, leaving the Wildcats a little thinner than originally anticipated. This team still has several big-meet performers and will finish in the top half of most meets when healthy.

Pontiac

HEAD COACH:

2011 RECORD: 2-3-0, 2-3-0 OAA Gold Division.

LEAGUE TOURNAMENT FINISH: Fourth at OAA Gold Division meet (106 points).

COUNTY FINISH: Sixth (33 points).

REGIONAL FINISH: Sixth at Division 1 Ortonville Brandon regional (54 points).

STATE FINALS FINISH: 22nd at Division 1 state finals (22 1/5 points).

JUMPS: Mariah Owens, jr. (All-State high jump); Brianna Edwards, jr.

THROWS: Khristian McGee, sr.; Kassandra Smith, sr.

NOTABLES: The OAA shift to geographical division has the Phoenix in the OAA-White. Pontiac, like many past years, may not be a very deep team and excel in dual meets, but will have a core of athletes that will again shine at large invitational-style meets.

Pontiac Academy of Excellence

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

HEAD COACH: Megan Thaler

2011 RECORD: 6-0, 6-0 CHSL AA Division.

COUNTY FINISH: 13th (22 points).

REGIONAL FINISH: Third at Bloomfield Hills Lahser Division 2 regional (92 points).

STATE FINALS FINISH: 10th at Division 2 state finals (21 points).

LONG DISTANCE: Christina Casali, sr.; Sara Barron, sr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Angela Pangori, fr.

NOTABLES: Notre Dame Prep was a talented team in the CHSL and Division 2 last season. With a solid core of returnees, along with a strong contingent of newcomers, this team could again be a formidable group against other schools its size.

(transferred to Auburn Hills Avondale; state qualifier in sprint relays); Ally Stanjones, sr. (throws).

NOTABLES: Two years removed from its Division 1 state championship team, expect Rochester still to up points in bunches at the league, regional and county level. The Falcons may also challenge with Adams and Clarkston for top honors at the league meet, although this team only has a couple of athletes with outside chances of top eight medals at the state finals.

Rochester Adams

HEAD COACH: Eric Lohr, third season.

2011 RECORD: 3-1-2, 3-1-2 OAA Red Division.

LEAGUE TOURNAMENT FINISH: Third at OAA Red Division league meet (76.5 points).

KEYNECOMERS: Amber Jamison, fr.; Raiven Owusu, fr.; Sydney Starwalt, fr.; Sophie Smith, fr.; Jessica Filbin, fr.

KEY LOSSES: Haley Hendricks (high jump, hurdles); Angelica Rankings (throws).

NOTABLES: An upset loss to Clarkston stunned the Highlanders just before Spring Break. With virtually the whole team back and an exceptionally deep and talented freshman class, expect this team to still compete for league and regional titles and return to the top five at the county meet in May. The Highlanders should also see several athletes score at the state finals. A program with a lot of history, this could end up being one of the school’s better teams.

Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Paul Duffy, 10th season.

2011 RECORD: 2-3-0, 2-3-0 OAA White Division.

LEAGUE TOURNAMENT FINISH: Sixth at OAA White Division (53 points).

LONG DISTANCE: Nichole Kowalchick, soph.

KEY LOSSES: Ashley Halm (sprints), Stephanie Cosentino (sprints); Mary Santi (distance);Megan Joiner (jumps, sprints)

NOTABLES: Moving to the OAA-Red, the Cougars will have some formidable athletes in certain events, but not enough of them. Nevertheless, facing stiff competition will aid the Cougars’ cause during the championship season, where they will still score points and send a contingent to the state meet.

Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest

HEAD COACH: Randy Tyler, fifth season.

LEAGUE TOURNAMENT FINISH: Second at MIAC league meet (76 points).

FINAL LEAGUE FINISH: Second at MIAC league meet (76 points).

LONG DISTANCE: Kristina Siekiewicz, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Lizzy Rouce, fr.

SPRINTS: Mikkayla Smith, soph.; Kelly Niemic, jr.; Gabbi Ellis, sr.(missed last season with injury); Micah Jones, soph.; Rachael Zelmanski, soph.; Annie Arbitter, sr.

HURDLES: Sydney Heath, soph.; Kim Christie, sr.; Abby Green, soph.; Jessica Mathis, soph.

MIDDLE DISTANCE: Katie Shaheen, sr.

LONG DISTANCE: Lauren Miller, soph.; Tarah Thompson, sr.(missed last season); Kira Burnett, jr.; Maral Toukhanian, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: There are 30 freshmen on the team, but this group is highly unproven with no phenoms in the group.

NOTABLES: Troy, which has finished first or second in the league each of the past seven years, has shifted more towards a sprints and field events team as its distance core took a large hit to graduation each of the past two years. Expect the colts to win the OAA white Division (central schools) and maybe be able to win another regional.

HURDLES: Tracey Lo, sr.;

MIDDLE DISTANCE: Tracey Lo, sr.; Lauren McMiking, soph.; Ester Yan, soph.; Jaclyn Dibartolomeo, sr.; Grace O’;Neill, soph.

KEY LOSSES: Zakiya Aniapam (sprints); Kristi Villarosa (hurdles), Lindsey Ransone (hurdles, jumps), Kate Dickerson (distance), Emily Orlando (distance).

NOTABLES: Athens has a handful of quality athletes, but what will hurt the Red Hawks is sure numbers. There are only 26 athletes on the entire roster.
