BOYS LACROSSE TEAM CAPSULES 2012

Below are the prep boys lacrosse team capsules for schools located in the www.northoaklandsports.com coverage area. Capsules compiled by Dan Stickradt. Wishing to have your team’s information published in this space, forward pertinent information to results@northoaklandsports.com or dan.stickradt@northoaklandsports.com

Clarkston

HEAD COACH: Brian Kaminskas

2011 RECORD: 18-2-0, 6-1-0 OAA Red Division (second).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Defeated Davison (15-1) and Brighton (10-6) before losing in Division 1 regional finals to eventual state champion Birmingham Brother Rice (18-5).

RETURNING STARTERS: Kevin O’Grady, sr. A; Travis Craft, sr. M; Jordan Kincaid, sr. A (fourth-year varsity starter); Kevin Horton, sr. A; Nick Demattia, sr. LSM; Evan Kniesel, jr. M/A; Ethan Frick, sr. A.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Sam Moore, jr. M; Mike Vanderweel, sr. D (third-year varsity); Reid Kaminski, soph. A.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Several first-year players.

KEY LOSSES: Matt Burtnett, D (Rollins College); Alexander Dziewit, M (Albion College); Alex Fitzgerald, M/FOGO (UM-Dearborn); Matt Goebel, G.

NOTABLES:Coming off a school record for wins, Clarkston has high expectations this season. The Wolves finished second to Troy Athens last season in the OAA Red Division and is expected to challenge again this season. Few teams will have the offensive potency as the Wolves. The question that remains for Clarkston is defense and goaltending, where there are some shoes to fill. If the Wolves can put it all together this season, they should be a top-10 team in Division 1.

PULLING THE TRIGGER: Clarkston's Kevin Horton and the Wolves hope to score goals in bunches again this season and challenge for the OAA Red Division title. File Photo | Larry McKee, www.lmckeephotography.com

Lake Orion

HEAD COACH: Brad Thomas, second season.

2011 RECORD: 10-7-0, 5-0-0 OAA White Division (first).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 pre-regional to Davison (10-8).

RETURNING STARTERS: Brad Bogus, sr. A (All-State Honorable Mention; led team in total points the past two seasons); Jacob Berkal, sr. M (All-State Honorable Mention; leading scorer last season); Robert Aiello, sr. LSM (Al-State Honorable Mention); Ian Schlitt, sr. FO/M (won .650 of all face-offs last season); Sean Raymor, sr. M ;Grant Glende, jr. D/M; Zach Miller, jr. A; Nick Booker, jr. M.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES:  Mitch Leahey, jr. D; Nick DeAngelis, jr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Nick Knitter, jr. D; Michael Gorsick, jr. D; Joseph Goodrich, jr. M; Mitchell Holt, jr. LSM; Joey Friedman, soph. D; Devon Fulcher, soph. G; Tyler Gattinger, soph. A; Tanner Seibold, soph. M; Kyle Pillivant, soph. M.

KEY LOSSES: Nick Kinsler, G; Tyler Misiak, D; Colin Simmons, D; Nick DiPonio, A; Jimmy Davis, M; Nick Luby, D.

NOTABLES: Lake Orion captured its first league crown last May after coming in the sport for only a half-decade, but followed that up with a disappointing first-round exit in the postseason. The Dragons return two-thirds of their main rotation, so indications are good that this team can again be one of the more competitive teams in the two-division OAA. The main area of concerns is on the backline, where three defensemen and goalkeeper were lost to graduation. If new prospects can fill those holes, then Lake Orion is destined for another quality season.

Oxford

HEAD COACH: Greg Normand, first season.

2011 RECORD: 1-16-0, 1-4 OAA White Division (fifth place).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 2 pre-regional to East Lansing (15-1).

RETURNING STARTERS:

OTHER KEY RETURNEES:

KEY NEWCOMERS:

KEY LOSSES:

NOTABLES: This is only Oxford’s third campaign as a varsity program and the Wildcats have a long ways to go in order to compete in the OAA White Division. Journeyman Greg Normand, who has coached lacrosse, skiing, track and golf and is both a high school and collegiate basketball official in Southeastern Michigan dating back to the 1980s, takes over the reins after recently coaching at both Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. He aims to help add some more permanent building blocks over the next few months. With wins extremely rare the past two years, any victory will be significant for the Wildcats.

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

HEAD COACH: Ron Herbert.

2011 RECORD: 18-4-0, 4-2-0 CHSL Division 2 (first).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Defeated Ann Arbor Greenhills (20-3), Tecumseh (12-6), Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood (14-3) to win regional title; lost to Division 3 Final Four to Birmingham Detroit Country Day (8-5).

RETURNING STARTERS: Matt Sciatzinski, D; Andrew Wodrich, D; David Cedars, M; DJ Pagnucco, M; Jacob Edgar, D.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Kyle Beauregard, A (currently injured); Connor Siano, M;  Frank Sardelli, M; Connor Cervone, M; Geogg Zinn, A.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Zach Nantau, G; Gavin Bertrum, A; Mark Thierbacker, M; Reid Siano, D/M.

KEY LOSSES: Brandon Beauregard, A (All-State, U-D Mercy); Joe Gifford, A (All-State, U-D Mercy).

NOTABLES: The Fighting Irish are coming off an exception season in 2011, reaching the Final Four. There are five returning starters and 14 players back with varsity experience, so there is a solid core to rebuild upon for this season.

Rochester

HEAD COACH:

2011 RECORD: This is a first-year expansion team.

NOTABLES: Rochester High forms its own team after competing was Rochester United along with Stoney Creek students the past several years. This team is 0-2-0 so far this season, losing to Flint Powers Catholic (12-11) and Lake Orion (8-5).

Rochester Adams

HEAD COACH: Andrew Monmont, fourth season.

2011 RECORD:

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Defeated Grosse Pointe North (8-6) in pre-regional; Lost to Warren DeLaSalle in Division 2 regional semifinals (7-5).

RETURNING STARTERS:

OTHER KEY RETURNEES:

KEY NEWCOMERS:

KEY LOSSES:

NOTABLES:

Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Michael Dungan.

2011 RECORD: 12-6-0, 3-3-0 OAA Red Division (fourth).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Defeated Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (7-6) in Division 1 pre-regional; lost to Ann Arbor Pioneer (9-7) in regional semifinals.

RETURNING STARTERS: Kurt Urbin, sr. A (All-State Honorable Mention); Stephen Acciaioli, sr. A;  Caleb Smydra, sr. D.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Michael Angeli, jr. M;  Michael Capoccia, sr. D; Areeya Forouzandeh, jr. M/F; Brian Gill, sr. M; Tanner Lafrance, jr. M; Jacob McCaslin, sr. D/M; Connor McLeod, sr. LSM; John-Anthony Stepp, jr. A; Zak Woodruff, sr. D; Taylor Zuke, sr. M; Matt Connors, sr. M/F.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Ross Payne, soph. G; Keivan Forouzandeh, soph. LSM.

KEY LOSSES: Jacob Pincura, M (All-State Third Team); Nathan Duff, G (All-State Second Team); Alex Labrecque, D.

NOTABLES: Rochester United won the OAA White Division title two years ago and last were made the leap to the OAA red Division, finishing in the middle of the pack. This season, United is split up into Stoney Creek and Rochester High for the first time, giving the district three teams just like girls lacrosse in Rochester. There may be a lack of depth due to the split, but many of the key players here last season were from Stoney Creek.

Troy

HEAD COACH: Towbey Kassa, fourth season.

2011 RECORD:  4-15-0, 1-6 OAA Red Division (sixth).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Defeated Port Huron in Division 1 pre-regional (17-4); lost to Ann Arbor Pioneer in regional semifinals (9-8, overtime).

RETURNING STARTERS: Zack Ambrose, sr. M; Dan Birkett, jr. G; Sean Sronsteen, sr. LSM; Jay Darish, soph. A/M; Connor Hayden, jr. D; Nick Kondoleon, sr. A; Miles MacDonald, sr. M; Colin McLean, jr. A; Jay Stackovich, sr. D.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Christian Capece, sr. M; Oliver Jiang, sr. M; Robert Kraft, sr. M; John McAuliffe, sr. M/A; Kevin McDonald, sr. D; Joe Prichard, sr. M; Trevor Gohl, sr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Nico Arsanos, jr. D; Justice Bigelow, soph. M/A; Grant Garbinski, jr. M; Andy Hall, sr. M; Omar Hamed, jr. D; Osama Imam, sr. D; Brian Johnson, jr. D; Mitch Judy, sr. LSM; Alaa Kaakarli, jr. M; Mike Olson, jr. M; Andres Salinas, jr. M; Evan Williams, jr. D.

KEY LOSSES: Niko Vikov, Ben Olsen, Jeff Bumbales, Bobby Buchchet, Jason Nolan.

NOTABLES: Troy ventured through back-to-back rebuilding  campaigns and registered only four wins last spring, but one came in the postseason. The Colts return over two-third of thirds of their key personal, as they will try to right the ship and return to at least .500 territory. There are nine returning starters and 16 total players with varsity experience, so the building blocks are in place for a team ready to revamp its engines.

Troy Athens

HEAD COACH: Nick Stetsen.

2011 RECORD: 16-6-0, 6-0-0 OAA Red Division (first).

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Birmingham Brother Rice (17-4) in Division 1 state semifinals. Went 3-0 in regional play, defeating Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse (10-3), Utica Eisenhower (6-4) and Ann Arbor Pioneer (11-3).

RETURNING STARTERS: Kevin Lining, sr. M (All-State First Team (signed with Queens of Charlette); Nick Davis, sr. M; Matt Fitzpatrick, sr. D (All-State First Team); Matt Dougherty, jr. A; Brandon Neal, sr. D/M; Jake Spinek, sr. D/M; Dakota Badder sr. A (being recruited by several schools).

KEY NEWCOMERS: Cameron Bazin, soph. D; Danny Harris, jr. D.

KEY LOSSES: Joe Kemp, M (All-State First Team; John Hopkins; all-time leading scorer in school history); Dan Kreza, F (All-State Second Team); Neil Mistry, G (All-State Third Team).

NOTABLES: Athens is coming off one of its best seasons to date, which included an undefeated league season, a regional championship and a spot in the Final Four before falling to national powerhouse Birmingham Brother Rice. The Red Hawks did lose some explosiveness out of its high-octane offense with the departure of Kemp and Kreza, but there are no signs of a major letdown. There are several quality players still in the fold and Athens could very well again be a team capable of making a return trip to the Final Four.
