OAKLAND TOWNSHIP — Monday’s blustery conditions were not ideal for a typical round of golf. In fact, the elements were far from favorable.

“I don’t think I’ve taken kids out on the course before with it this windy,” admitted Rochester Adams boys golf coach Dan Picot. “The conditions weren’t good.”

While the playing conditions were far from perfect, Picot was quite pleased with the results. The Highlanders won the first OAA Red Division Tournament Monday at Twin Lakes Golf Club, putting together a play-six, count-four team score of 317 to win by 11 strokes.

Rochester Stoney Creek was second at 328, following by Lake Orion (330), Rochester (334), Troy (336) and Clarkston (339) in the six-school field.

“I think we were the only team that played consistent. We didn’t have any one (player) blow up,” admitted Picot. “We had one guy break 80 and two shot 80. I am very pleased with this result, especially considered how good the teams in our division are this season. There is some serious talent and some legitimate teams and individuals.

“It was extremely windy, a good 3-4 club difference with the wind or against the wind,” continued Picot, admitting the tough conditions hurt most teams. “Our guys found a way to play through it.”

Adams, which shared the league crown with Lake Orion last season — the final standings went down to the final day of dual matches last June — has a seasoned group of players. The Highlanders, who did not graduate a single player from their roster, were paced by junior Eric Busa, which finished second in the medalist standings with a four-over round of 76.

Ben Van Orman and Drew White tied for fourth with rounds of 80 and Marcus Robinson tied for seventh with an 81.

Lake Orion’s Mason Gorris was medalists with a fine round of 75. Stoney Creek sophomore Mike Doyle was third with a 77 and Lake Orion’s Alex Waelchli’s 80 tied for fourth.

Stoney Creek’s Mike Linihan, Rochester’s Eric Shyu and Scott Defillippo and Troy’s James Heichel all tied for seventh with 81s.

“I told the guys that there will be some players that kind of blow up and that we just had to play through the wind and be consistent,” said Picot. “I thought if we could shoot around 320, then we’d be in the mix. As it turned out, we shot 317 and no one else was within 10 strokes. Our division is particularly loaded with players talent-wise. That’s what makes this win even more impressive, knowing the talent in this league.”
