SOFTBALL: Notre Dame Prep takes pair from Bishop Foley
MADISON HEIGHTS — Behind an extra inning effort, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep was able to pull out a sweep Tuesday on the softball diamond against Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
In the opener, the Fighting Irish outlasted Foley, 11-9, in eight innings, while coming back in Game 2 to post a 5-1 victory to clinch the CHSL-AA Division sweep.
Locked in a 8-8 tie entering the eighth inning, Notre Dame Prep scored three times in the top of the frame to pull ahead for good. The Ventures scored a run in the bottom half but couldn’t force another extra frame.
Carly Joseph pitched all eight innings, scattering seven hits, nine earned runs with seven strikeouts.
Courtney Wrubel paced the attack with three hits, scored three runs and drove home another run. Courtney Avronov finished a perfect 4-for-4, scored twice and plated four runs, while Katy Roose belted a two-run home run and scored twice.
Jackie Bieniewicz and Colleen Szakacs both belted four-baggers for Foley.
The nightcap field less drama, as the Fighting Irish plated single runs in the first, second, fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Foley scored its run in the second frame.
Gabbey Fazio finished 3-for-3, had a home run and drove in two runs, while Courtney Avronov scored a run and added two hits to back the pitching of Joseph, who stuck out three and scattered only four hits for Notre Dame Prep (9-2, 7-2).
Juliana Aiuteo went yard for Bishop Foley in Game 2.
