COLLEGE BASEBALL: Warriors advance to USCAA World Series tourney

ROCHESTER HILLS — Rochester College is back in the show.

The Warriors’ baseball team has qualified for their second straight United States Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series this year which begins this week in Springfield, Ill.

The USCAA unveiled the 2012 Small College World Series field and Rochester College, under the direction of fourth-year coach Jordan Ackerman, earned the No. 3 seed in the field of 10 schools.

The Warriors earned themselves a first-round bye and will open up tournament play on May 8 against Penn State- Mont Alto at 6:30 p.m. The tournament is being hosted by Robert Morris University-Springfield, and will be played at Robin Roberts Stadium.

Tournament play officially opened up on May 7, at 8:30 a.m. The teams will partake in a home run derby on May 6. Spalding University out of Kentucky and The Apprentice School, located in Virginia, captured the two top seeds in the tournament ahead of Rochester College.

Rochester College is led by Alex Hacias, who heads the Warriors’ attack in several offensive categories going into postseason play, including batting average (.436), hits (61), RBI (37), and walks (22). Hacias also broke the school record on Senior Day for most hits in a single season.

Senior Captain Ryan Chipka  (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) enters the post season batting .325 and has batted in 30 runs, good for second on the team. David Woodson (Vallejo, Calif./Vallejo) leads the Warriors with 18 extra base hits in the regular season (11 doubles, 5 triples, and a homerun).
