SPORTS SHORTS: Clarkston to host “Game for a Cure”

CLARKSTON — The Clarkston boys lacrosse program is sponsoring their 8th annual Game for a Cure on Saturday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Clarkston High School Stadium.

All of the proceeds from the event go to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Cancer Research Center in Pontiac

“Last year, Game for a Cure donated over $9,000 to St. Joseph’s Cancer Research Center,” commented Vicki O’Grady, Game for a Cure coordinator.

Game for a Cure t-shirts are on sale now for $10 and can be ordered by emailing Kim Kneisel at kk2tall@aol.com. The T-shirt also allows free admission to the event on May 12.

Over 20 teams will participate in lacrosse games throughout the day, with the game highlight being the Clarkston High School boys varsity squad hitting the field at 7:30 p.m. for a match-up against Lake Orion High School.

Clarkston Varsity players will also wear commemorative jerseys to honor a loved one who has been affected by cancer. Additionally, a check presentation to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital will also take place during the varsity game. Other activities throughout the day include a radar gun contest for the fastest lacrosse shot, a bake sale and food from concession sales.

Game for a Cure was started 8 years ago as a tribute to Frank Kaminskas “Big Poppa,” whose positive influence impacted many in the lacrosse community.

Clarkton Lacrosse continues to honor Big Poppa by hosting Game for a Cure young players the importance of giving back and investing in their community,” commented Brian Kaminskas, Clarkston Varsity head coach. “As coaches we believe it’s important to echo the values and lessons that are being taught in the homes of our players. Establishing a “day of lacrosse” seemed like the natural way to mirror this.”
