SOFTBALL: Athens sweeps Avondale to clinch OAA White Division title share; Clarkston slaps Farmington

TROY — Troy Athens picked up a pair of wins on the softball diamond Friday and with it clinched at least a tie of its first league title in decades.

The Red Hawks swept Auburn Hills Avondale, 9-1 and 14-3, to come to within one game of an outright title.  Athens will visit second place Rochester next Wednesday and will need at least a split to secure the title.

In the opener, Melissa Palmer finished 3-for-4 with a double and scored three times, while Sarah Watson was 3-for-3 and scored twice for Athens (17-4-1, 8-0).

HERE'S THE SCOOP: Troy Athens' Melissa Palmer and the Red Hawks clinched at least a tie for the OAA White Division championship Friday with a sweep of Auburn Hills Avondale.

In the nighcap, Zemmer fanned six, walked two and again gave up only three hits. She was aided by a pair of five-run offensive outputs.

Palmer finished 4-for-5, laced two triples, scored three times and had six RBI. Erica Siismets was 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for the Red Hawks.

CLARKSTON 7, FARMINGTON 3: Clarkston inched closer to the OAA Red Division title with this win Friday over Farmington.

The Wolves scored three runs each in the third and fourth innings and tacked on another run in the seventh for good measure. Farmington scored three in the third.

Rachel Pytel was 4-for-4and scored a run and Rachel Vieira was 3-for-4, scored twice and drove in another run to pace Clarkston. Megan Hastings supplied two hits and three RBI, while Rachel Alli, Mikayla Blaska and Candace Kitchen all added two hits apiece, as the Wolves rapped out 16 hits on the afternoon.

Madeline Maday scattered seven hits, struck out six, walked two and didn’t give up an earned run in the win.
