UTICA — This match had trap game written all over it.

Coming off a 3-2, double-overtime victory over third-ranked Utica Eisenhower on Tuesday, Rochester Stoney Creek found the terrain a little rough Thursday night in a Division 1 girls soccer district semifinal at Utica’s Swinehart Field.

In fact, the Cougars received a downright scare against Utica.

Stoney Creek persevered in the end, claiming a 2-1 victory over district host Utica to advance to Saturday’s district final against Rochester Adams.

Adams defeated Rochester in Thursday’s other district semifinal and will collide with Stoney Creek at 12 noon for the district championship.

“This was a scary game because we were coming off that win over Eisenhower,” offered Stoney Creek coach Bryan Mittlelstadt. “We had so many chances, we just couldn’t score. And they scored on a free kick. We came through in the end, but we had so many chances. We hit the crossbar twice and the goal post twice. We should have had a few goals by halftime.”

Stoney Creek outshot Utica by a 15-2 margin. After a scoreless first half, Lauren Bulhuis staked Stoney Creek (16-3-1) to a 1-0 lead.

Utica (8-8-4) had the answer and tied the match when Megan Horan scored off a free kick. The Chieftains could not muster another shot after that point.

Freshman Maria Zandi netted the game-winner in the 65th minute for Stoney Creek when she scored unassisted. Halee Michel made one save to gain the win for the Cougars.

“We have a lot of younger players on this team and I didn’t know how they would react after such a tough game,” said Mittelstadt. “But we found a way to win. Utica played us tough. We just couldn’t score in the first half.”
