PREP BASEBALL: Lake Orion ends five-year drought, claims district crown

LAKE ORION — Despite being one of the state’s top prep baseball programs over the past dozen years, Lake Orion has run into a postseason roadblock on the baseball diamond in recent times.

Since winning its only state baseball championship in 2007, the state-ranked Dragons have not been able to escape the district round of the postseason. The Dragons lost in the district semifinals in 2008 and 2009 and then in the pre-district the past two seasons.

Lake Orion snapped that five-year drought Monday afternoon on its own diamond, topping rivals Clarkston and Oxford, to advance to the regional semifinals. The Dragons defeated Clarkston, 10-0, in the semifinals and Oxford, 6-4, in the finals to claim their seventh district title in coach Andy Schramek’s 14-year tenure.

Lake Orion (29-8) will face league member Rochester Stoney Creek Saturday at the Division 1 Hartland regional Saturday. Rochester Adams and Hartland will play in the other contest.

In the semifinals against Clarkston, Nick Deeg surrendered only one hit in the finals. Deeg helped his own cause going 3-for-3 which included a three-run home run. The Dragons led 5-0 through two frames and never let off the gas pedal.

Brad Schaenzer struck out 12 in the finals against Oxford, which closed to within two runs in the sixth.

Nick Voglemeier, Dalton Oveson and Ryan Lembrecht all had RBI singles for Lake Orion.

Kyle Hardwick drove in two runs and Vinnie Griffith added an RBI for Oxford.

The Wildcats had advanced with a swift 2-1 win over Waterford Kettering, but could not find enough in the tank to rally past Lake Orion in the finals.
