(EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to some technical difficulties, NOS is reposting some of its fall and winter sports All-Area teams from the 2011-12 school year.)

In terms of team success in girls skiing, only two area teams qualified for the state finals in each of the two divisions last season. That didn’t take away from the fact that there was still plenty of individual talent on the slopes.

That is evidenced on the 2012 All-North Oakland Area Girls Ski Team.

Expanding to include schools from Pontiac, Ortonville and Holly in all sports this school year, this squad, selected by NOS staff in conjunction with area coaches, features several talented skiers, four who will be back in a high school uniform next winter.

Below is a brief look at the skiers named to the first team:

FIRST TEAM

MARIE DOHM, Lake Orion: Dohm capped a fine four-year career as the area’s top racer. A senior, Dohm was exceptional in the giant slalom, finishing second at the Pine Knob Ski League meet and winning both the Pine Knob regional and Division 1 state titles in the event, becoming the school’s first female state champion in skiing. In the slalom, she was also first-team all-state, finishing fourth at the divisional, second at the regional and seventh at the state finals.

RACHEL DAWSON, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep: A scholar athlete, Dawson led the Fighting Irish to a third place finish at the Cannonsburg regional and eighth place finish at the Division 2 state finals. A junior, Dawson was fourth at the Pine Knob Ski League meet, seventh at the regional and 18th at the state meet in the slalom. Over in the GS, she was fifth at Pine Knob, sixth at the regional and 15th at the state finals.

RACHEL HARRINGTON, Holly-Oxford Unified: This senior moved up to first-team status after a fine campaign as the Bronchos’ top racer. In the slalom, she was third at the Mt. Holly Divisional, seventh at the Pine Knob regional, 14th at the SEMSL meet and 45th at the Division 1 state finals. In the GS, she was third at the divisional, fifth at the regional, 13th at the SEMSL and hiked at the state finals and did not complete the race.

CAROLINE SPYTMAN, Clarkston: One of three freshmen in Clarkston’s top seven racers, Spytman is one of two to make the first team. In the slalom, she was 19th at the Pine Knob Ski League and 11th at the Pine Knob regional. In the GS, she was 12th at the league meet, 23rd at the regional and 32nd at the Division 1 state finals, helping Clarkston land fifth overall.

KAROLINE HOLSBEKE, Clarkston: A sophomore in her second varsity campaign, Holsbeke was a consistent racer for the Wolves, who are back on the rise as one of the better teams in southeastern Michigan. She claimed 16th at the regional and 27th at the state meet in the slalom, while she was sixth at the Pine Knob ski League meet, eighth at the regional and 30-th at the state meet in the giant slalom.

MADELEINE DECLERQ, Clarkston: Another talented freshman in the Wolves’ lineup, DeClerq proved to be another consistent force. DeClerq had many notable performances, beginning in the slalom where she was 23rd at the Pine Knob League meet, 24th at the regional and 39th at the state finals. Over in the GS, she had a rough outing at the league meet by placing 50th but recouped to place 17th at the regional and 27that the state finals.

OLIVIA DUNN, Clarkston: The rock in the Wolves’ lineup as the top senior, Dunn is a repeat performer on the All-Area First Team. Dunn finished 14th at the Pine Knob Ski League meet, 12th at the regional and 61st at the D-1 state finals in GS. Over in the slalom, Dunn finished 11th at the league meet, 18th at the regional and 32nd at state. She is also a member of the Wolves’ tennis team which won a state title in 2011 and will be amongst the top team in 2012.

LAUREN HENRY, Rochester Adams: A junior who stepped up from honorable mention to the first team, Henry was racing with slight ACL tear but fought through the pain to finish as a state qualifier. Her strength came in the GS, where she was 10th at the Pine Knob Ski League meet, second at the Pine Knob regional and 33rd at the Division 1 state finals. She also placed 42nd in the slalom at the league meet, but fell at the regional and did not qualify for the state finals.

KENDALL ROSALIK, Rochester Adams: Joining Dohm and Dunn as repeat performers on the first team, Rosalik’s senior campaign saw her qualify for the state finals in the slalom. She was ninth at the Pine Knob Ski League meet, fifth at the regional and 18th at the Division 1 state finals in the slalom. In the GS, she was 32nd at the league meet and 13th at the regional.

COACH OF THE YEAR

PETE DRISCOLL, Rochester Adams-Stoney Creek Unified: It has been a trying school year for Driscoll, who finished his eighth season at the helm of the program after fighting through three separate health problems. Driscoll, who also coaches girls golf at Adams, ended up missing two thirds of that season where the Highlanders actually qualified for the state finals. During the ski season, Driscoll fought through his ongoing battles to still make it out to the slopes each days and his teams competed well inside the Pine Knob Ski League. Adams finished 5-4 in duals, trailing four teams that qualified for either the Division 1 or Division 2 state finals. Adams finished fourth at the Division 1 Pine Knob regional with 164 points, only five points behind Grand Blanc for the third state qualifying spot.
