OXFORD — Liam Logan came through in the clutch Friday evening.
The senior running back from Oxford scored on a 4-yard plunge in the second overtime session in leading Oxford to a 34-31 victory over defending OAA White Division champion Farmington Harrison.
“This a total team win. We played excellent team football,” praised veteran Oxford coach Bud Rowley. “We did a great job coming back in the second half and taking a very good team to overtime. We were able to pull it out when it counted most.”
Logan, who finished with 67 yards on 24 rushes, scored three touchdowns for the Wildcats (2-1, 2-0). The first came on a 1-run run in the third quarter and the second on a 1-yard scamper in the first overtime period, which temporarily gave Oxford a 28-21 advantage.
Harrison tied the game in the first overtime when Dorian Fields caught a 6-yard pass from Ryan Brand and went ahead at 31-28 in the second overtime when Zack Mass booted a 16-yard field goal.
That set up Logan’s second OT heroics, which came on third down.
Jordan Austin staked Harrison (2-1, 1-1) to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and the Hawks led 21-7 at the half thanks to Eddie Huckleby’s 21-ryub TD run and Todd Moore’s20-yard sprint for paydirt.
Kyla Anderson hauled in a 3-yard dart from Glacier Wallington in the third quarter to tie the game at 21-21 for Oxford. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Jeff Nelson made all four extra points for Oxford.
Huckleby finished with 123 yards on 34 carries for Harrison.
It marked Oxford’s second straight win over a playoff team from last season following a season-opening loss to Lake Orion.
“Everybody was making such a big deal about that loss. It was Week 1 and we saw where we were at and what we needed to work on,” said Rowley. “We have improved a lot since that game and we beat a great football program tonight.”
The Wildcats last win against Harrison came in 1999, a 17-14 triumph over the Hawks on a last-second field goal.
Harrison, which is 8-3 all-time against the Wildcats, defeated Oxford 34-7 last season and 35-0 in 2010.
