STERLING HEIGTHS — For two years, Rochester Stoney Creek was left to wonder.

The Cougars were puzzled as to how they could blow two late leads on rival Rochester in a Class A girls volleyball district semifinal the past two years and eventually be shown the postseason exit by the Falcons.

In fact, Stoney Creek was at match-point in both of those encounters before failing to close the deal.

Not this time.

Stoney Creek rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Falcons Wednesday night at Sterling Heights Stevenson, earning a long-overdue berth in the district finals. The Cougars slammed a 23-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-11 payback on Rochester to keep their postseason dream alive.

Stoney Creek, which has won back-to-back conference crowns, will face Utica Eisenhower Friday night, also at Stevenson. A win will serve up Stoney Creek’s first-ever district crown.

“My seniors really led the team through a tough game to come out with a victory,” said Stoney Creek coach Adrienne Leone. “Rochester played very well and during the third set we were down 19-12 and ended up coming back to win 25-23. I was so proud that we stuck together and stayed focus to pull through that set.”

Rochester won the first game and held a 23-18 advantage in Game 2 before faltering down the stretch. Stoney Creek rallied with a 7-0run to take the second set and draw the match even at a game apiece.

Rochester appeared to gain back some momentum in Game 3 and built a seven-point advantage at 19-12. The Cougars slowly clawed back and tied the game at 24-24 and eventually won by two points.

The fourth game was all Stoney Creek, as they sealed the deal with a 14-point victory in the final set.

“The girls have worked so hard this season and Rochester has beaten us in districts the past two years and I know that that was a driving factor for the girls to stick together and get the win,” added Leone.  “I know the girls and myself are looking forward to Fridays game against Eisenhower.”

Senior Alex Caporuscio finished with 42 assists, consistently finding the right teammate on the attack. Junior Morgan Darin followed with 17 kills and senior Jessie Sattmann slammed 10 kills for the Cougars.

Sara Sikorski had 10 kills and 20 assists for Rochester. Catie Wiacek added nine kills for Rochester.
