GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Troy records sixth district title in seven years with sweep of Athens

TROY — Troy Athens played hard. Troy played better.
Senior setter Lindsay Moeller spread around the attack as the Troy girls volleyball team cruised to its second straight Class A district title over host Athens, 25-11, 25-16, 25-18.
Having romped the Red Hawks on Sept. 5, this was a trap game for Troy. The Colts could have been focused on next week’s regional tournament, which will include state powers Birmingham Marian, Utica Eisenhower and the winner Lake Orion-Clarkston district final.
The win marked Troy won its sixth district title in seven years.
The Colts were flat-out better — and played like it. They have owned their cross-town rivals for the last two years and left no doubt Friday night.
Athens played with a lot of energy and put up a fight early in every game, but Troy put together some long runs to put the games away. The Colts called time-out up 10-8 in the first, but eventually won 25-11. Julie Welch and Nicole Hahn served five and nine straight points, respectively.
In the second game, Athens was hanging on at 17-15 until the Colts scored eight of the last nine to win 25-16.
Troy led only 17-14 in the third but pulled away to make it 23-14 and win 25-18.
“We’re so much better when we have energy on the court,” said Troy senior Nicole Hahn. “As long as we mentally focus and play energized, we’re just as good as any team out there.”
Hahn led Troy with 17 kills. The Colts advance to the regional tournament that starts Tuesday at Rochester at 5 p.m. Troy will play the winner of the Birmingham Seaholm district.
