FOOTBALL: Brother Rice shuts down Oxford
BERKLEY — In some circumstances, the numbers don’t lie.
Birmingham Brother Rice proved that on the football field Saturday against Oxford.
The defending Division 2 state champion Warriors outgained Oxford 313-49 on the ground and cruised to a 38-6 victory over the Wildcats at Berkley’s Hurley Field.
Brian Walker finished with 132 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns to lead Brother Rice (9-2) to the Division 2 district championship and into the Elite Eight. Shon Powell added 91 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown for the Warriors.

Ben Line and Zach Hadorn combined for 14 yards on 14 carries for the Wildcats (7-4), a predominantly rushing-style offensive team who were simply shut down by the stingy Rice defense.
Powell’s 7-yard sprint in the first quarter and Jason Alessi’s extra point staked Rice to the 7-0 first quarter run.
Greg Marzec’s 8-yard sprint and Walker’s 1-yard plunge added to the 21-0 halftime advantage.
Walker struck again in the third quarter on a 40-yard scamper and Alessi, who finished with five extra points, also booted a 270yard field goal in the third frame.
Marzec’s 79-yard kickoff run capped the scoring for the Warriors.
Mitch Tilley hauled in an 8-yard pass from backup quarterback Luke Champion midway through the fourth quarter to spoil the shutout.
