FOOTBALL: Waterford Our Lady burns Melvindale ABT

WATERFORD — After failing to make the postseason cut in 2011, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes is making up for lost time in 2012.

The Lakers motored into the Division 8 regional finals with a resounding 34-12 victory Saturday over visiting Melvindale Academy of Business & Tech in a Division 8 district final in Waterford..

WOLL (9-2) built a 10-0 lead at the half and opened up the game with a 24-12 second half.

Our Lady of the Lakes scored the game’s 17 points, led by Spender Howell’s first quarter 23-yard field goal, Mitch Lasceski’’s 2-yard run and Richie Cross’ 54-yard TD catch from Sam Mastromatteo.

Darrylnotay Hines’ 97-yard kickoff run brought ABT (7-4) back into the contest, only to see WOLL’s Mastromatteo answered with a 13-yard run later in the third quarter.
Jake Deutsch scored on a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter for WOLL, to build a commanding 34-6 lead.

Steve Meek caught a 64-yard heave from the arm of Kyran Worthy for the Gators, who failed on both conversion runs.

Mastromatteo finished with 110 yards passing on 10 attempts for WOLL. Cross and Garrett Ross both had interceptions for WOLL’s defense.
