COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL: Oakland claims 90-77 exhibition victory over Defiance

ROCHESTER HILLS – Duke Mondy tallied 24 points, eight steals and seven rebounds, while Travis Bader posted 20 points to lead Oakland past Defiance College, 90-77, in a men’s basketball exhibition game on Tuesday inside the Athletics Center O’Rena.

The Golden Grizzlies scored 32 points off 26 turnovers.

“This was kind of a strange game because you look at the numbers and we held them to less than a point-per-possession, which is really good, but at no time tonight did I feel like I was watching good defense,” said Oakland coach Greg Kampe. “They shot 51 percent in our gym, that’s not really good defense. I guess the telling stat is they had 26 turnovers and that led to a lot of easy baskets for us.”

Corey Petros posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Dante Williams and Ryan Bass recorded 12 and 10 points, respectively, for OU. The Golden Grizzlies finished the game with 20 steals and dominated the smaller Yellow Jackets in the paint, outscoring DC 42-22.

Logan Wolfrum finished with a team-high 21 points and Drew Frizell scored 20 for Defiance College. The Yellow Jackets shot 43 percent (12-for-28) from behind the arc, compared to OU’s 19 percent (4-for-21).

The Golden Grizzlies led for the entire game, pushing it all the way to 17 with less than four minutes remaining. Defiance got as close as seven points, 56-49, with 16:42 left in the game, but the Grizzlies quickly used a 6-0 run over the next minute to regain a double-digit lead.

The Golden Grizzlies will open the regular season on Friday against Albion College at 7:30 p.m. The first 1,000 fans to enter the O’Rena, starting at 5 p.m., will get an Oakland Fight Song T-Shirt.
