TUESDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL: Brandon edges Goodrich; Shrine escapes Oakland Christian; Avondale takes down University
ORTONVILLE — Behind a 43-29 first half, Ortonville Brandon built a large lead and held on for a 69-62 non-conference boys basketball victory Tuesday over visiting rival Goodrich.
Dylan Morris nailed five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Blackhawks. Alex Bageris added 14 points, Nick Keller scored seven, both Gabe Lindsay and Chuckie Rice chipped in with six points each and Quinton Cook scored five with 10 rebounds for Brandon (2-1).
Goodrich (1-1) rallied back with a 23-16 third-quarter run to pull to within 59-52 entering the final frame, but the Martians would get no closer. Both teams traded off 10 points in the fourth quarter.
Nick Rubio scored 14 and grant Smith and Carlos Fordham both followed with 11 points each for Goodrich.
ROYAL OAK SHRINE CATHOLIC 55, AUBURN HILLS OAKLAND CHRISTIAN 53:
Chris Polite missed a shot at the final buzzer and Shrine held on for the non-league win Tuesday.
Connor Francek scored 18 to pace the Knights. Cameron Cavanos added 12 points and both Stewart Franke and Tim Niehaus added eight points for Shrine Catholic, which converted 14-of-20 free throws.
Polite scored 15, Eric Unger followed with 11 points and D.J. Stevens chipped in with eight points in a losing effort for Oakland Christian, which made nine 3-pointers as a team but made only 4-of-10 free throws. .
Shrine led 11-7 after the first quarter and 23-17 at the half. The Knights pushed the lead to 41-27 entering the fourth quarter before Oakland Christian went on a 26-14 run in the fourth quarter but saw its comeback bid fall short.
AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 63, FERNDALE UNIVERSITY 52: Jabarr Mimms scored 17, Eric Stubbs added 16 points, Zarrick Sturgis chipped in with 13 points Chris Barton added 12 points
Jason Penn scored 23 and Anthony Martin added 10 points for University.
