COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Oakland’s Bethany Watterworth to miss remainder of season

| January 20, 2013 | Comments (0)

ROCHESTER  HILLS —  Preseason Summit League Player of the Year Bethany Watterworth of Oakland University will be out for the remainder of the season, announced OU head coach Beckie Francis.

Watterworth averaged over 18 points per game last season, but has missed all of 2012-13 with a back injury, suffered during the offseason.

“This is the right decision for Bethany,” said Francis. “A player’s health and safety has to come first and this isn’t something we wanted her to try and rush back from. She is a special player, who still has an important leadership role on our team, both this year and as a fifth-year senior next season.”

Watterworth plans to seek a medical redshirt for 2012-13, which would allow her to return to the team next season. She is the only senior on the current roster.

“Losing a player like Bethany is never easy,” said Francis. “But I think that it will allow some of our younger players to develop. Even without her in the lineup this year, I still have high expectations for this Oakland team.”
