WRESTLING: Avondale wins fourth district in five years
BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Auburn Hills Avondale made quite a statement Thursday evening at its Division 2 wrestling team district at Bloomfield Hills Andover.
The unranked Yellowjackets rolled over Bloomfield Hills Lahser (72-6) and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (63-12) to win its second district championship in three years and fourth in five seasons. Avondale lost in the district finals last season to Holly.
Avondale will compete in the Madison Heights Lamphere regional Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. against Southfield.
St. Mary’s downed Andover (36-30) in the other semifinal.
Dillon Brancheau (171), Brock Mather (135), Greg Hill (140), Kyle Gray (112) and Paul Czartorski (285), Derek Sprigg (119), Parker Stillfried (125), Adam Dignard (130) and Grant Sharkey (145) all won by void for Avondale (15-8).
Kyle Robertson (189) and Cartier Shelton (152) posted wins by decision and Ryan Rocca (103) won by void for the Yellowjackets.
