WRESTLING: Holly downs Lapeer West for fourth straight district crown
HOLLY — Enjoying postseason success is something that Holly’s wrestling team has become accustomed to in the past decade.
The Bronchos added another chapter on its own mats Thursday night.
Holly captured its fourth straight Division 2 district crown on its own mats, topping Lapeer West, 40-34, in the finals. The Bronchos downed Ortonville Brandon (40-20) in the semifinals, while Lapeer West edged Goodrich (40-34) in the other semifinal.
Holly, which will wrestle Flint Kearsley in the regional semifinals Feb. 13 at Ortonville Brandon, led by as many as 24 points before Lapeer West rallied to make the match tight in the end.
Jacob Pallesen (119), Sam Johnson (130) and Mason Cleaver (135) all won via pin for the Bronchos. Jesse Torres (145), Kyle Pepper (152) and Andrew Scott (160) added wins by decision, while Colton Cleaver (103) and Justin Hennard (112)recorded wins by void for Holly.
Lapeer West’s Adam Nichols pulled a major upset when he toppled top-ranked Anthony Gonzales (140) by pin. Lapeer West Dean Somers (125), C.J. Melton (171), Jacob Luckett (215) and Justin Thomas (285) also won by pin. Noah Raymond (189) recorded a win by decision for the Panthers.
