WEDNESDAY’S GIRLS BASKETBALL DISTRICTS: Oxford soars past Romeo; Clarkston tramples Lake Orion; Fenton takes rubber match over Holly

OXFORD — Behind the duo of Miranda and Jessica Murphy, Oxford proved to be too much for Romeo in Wednesday’s Class A district semifinal.

Jessica Murphy scored 18 with seven rebounds and four steals and Miranda Murphy added 12 points in Oxford’s 56-39 triumph over the Bulldogs, sending the Wildcats into Friday’s 7 p.m. district final against state-ranked Clarkston.

Shelby Davis added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Oxford (16-5), which has its highest win total since 2001. The Wildcats finished the night a crisp 23-for-27 from the foul line.

Lindsey Herndon scored 23 points and Rachael Boeve added six points for Romeo (13-9).

MORE CLASS A

CLARKSTON 50, LAKE ORION 16: Clarkston had no problems ushering Lake Orion form Wednesday’s Class A district semifinal at Oxford, outscoring the Dragons in each of the four quarters to advance to Friday’s district finals against district host Oxford.

Clarkston, ranked sixth in Class A, captured its 18th straight win to move to 20-1 overall on the season.

Erika Davenport scored 26 points and Kacy Robinson added six points for Clarkston.

Delaney Haan scored six for Lake Orion, which finished 3-18.

FENTON 51, HOLLY 47: After the two schools split in the regular season, Fenton won the rubber match Wednesday at Grand Blanc.

The Tigers outscored Holly 19-17 in the fourth quarter to keep Holly at bay.

Cassandra Reuschlin scored 12 and Payton Maxheimer followed with 10 points for Fenton (14-7), which led 19-17 at the end of the first quarter.

Allyssa Copley scored 19 and Kaitlyn Smith added 15 points for Holly (18-4).

ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 56, STERLING HEIGHTS STEVENSON 25: A 17-5 surge at the start of the game helped the Cougars gain some early momentum and it steamrolled into this lopsided 31-point rout in a Class A district semifinal at Rochester High.

Lauren Voss scored 17 to lead Stoney Creek (14-8). Laura Johnston and Maria Zandi added 11 points each and Natalie Voss supplied seven points for the Cougars, who led 30-7 at the half and outscored the Titans 26-18 in the second half.

WATERFORD MOTT 53, TROY ATHENS 36: Mott built a 21-11 edge after the first quarter and maintained the lead throughout in dropping Athens from the Class A state tournament with this 17-point victory.

Lauren Hung scored 21 to lead Mott. Jamie Carter added nine points for the Corsairs (14-8).

Taylor Hill scored 15 and Lauren Atwell added 11 points for Athens (1-20).
CLASS C

AUBURN HILLS OAKLAND CHRISTIAN 49, BLOOMFIELD HILLS SACRED HEART 31: Oakland Christian blew the game open with a big early lead and cruised into Friday’s district finals against Madison Heights Bishop Foley.

Becky VanSloten scored a game high 24 points to lead the Lancers, who led 20-4 after the first quarter and 30-13 at the half. Erin Washington added 12 points for Oakland Christian (11-11).

Caroline Carr scored eight for Sacred Heart.

CLASS D

 

WATERFORD OUR LADY OF THE LAKES 70, WARREN MACOMB CHRISTIAN 19: The defending state champions cruised into Friday’s district finals against Birmingham Roeper with this convincing win on its home court.

Ave Doetsch led a balanced attack with 19 points. Jessica Parry added nine points and both Lexie Robak and Shelby Mann scored eight points apiece for the Lakers, who opened with a 26-9 run and never looked back.

WOLL Led 40-15 at the half and outscored the Crusaders 30-4 in the second half.

Shaina Rawles scored 12 for Macomb Christian.

CLARKSTON EVEREST COLLEGIATE 59, BURTON FAITH CHRISTIAN 13: A monster 36-6 first half was more than enough to propel the Mountaineers past the district hosts and into Friday’s district finals.

Luciua Westrick scored 14 points to lead Everest. Sarina Nallamothu and Ashley Lowney added 11 points each for the Moutaineers (17-5).
