BOYS BASKETBALL: Everest Collegiate repeats as district champion

BURTON — Clarkston Everest Collegiate enjoyed its first boys basketball district so much last season that the Mountaineers decided to do it again.

Behind a dominating effort, Everest Collegiate, in just its fourth season, routed Flint Madison Academy, 64-38, in a Class D district final at Burton St. Thomas More Academy.

The Mountaineers (15-7) rolled out to a 17-6 lead after the first quarter to take control. Thanks to a 10-8 edge in the second quarter, Everest climbed up to a 27-14 l;ead at the half.

The Mountaineers continued to pull away in the second half, as a 19-8 surge in the third period built a 46-22 advantage. Everest, which finished, 19-for-30 from the foul line, closed with an 18-16 fourth quarter.

David Smith led a balanced attack with 19 points and Richie Cross added 17 points, as the Mountaineers sent eight players into the scoring column.

Blake Beauchamp added nine points and Noah Beauchamp followed with six points for Everest Collegiate.

Flint Madison Academy, just a second-year high school making its first appearance in a district final, was paced by Thomas Tilmen’s 18 points.
