BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Birmingham Roeper proved you don’t have to finish with a winning record in the regular season to enjoy postseason success.

The Roughriders, who finished just 7-13 in the regular season, won its second game of the week Friday night in the Class D boys basketball state tournament. This time came in the district final at their Bloomfield Hills campus against favored Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes.

Roeper turned in a stunner by sinking the Lakers, 51-44, to advance to Monday’s regional semifinals against Peck.

The Roughriders outscored WOLL by a 23-19 margin in the fourth quarter to prevail.

Waterford Lakes (13-9) raced out to a 13-3 lead by the end of the first quarter but could only muster 27 points over the final three frames. Roeper responded with a 12-4 run over the next eight minutes to pull to within 17-15 at the half.

The Roughriders again used a 13-8 third quarter to go up 28-25.

Garrett House scored 22 and Abe Hashwi added 21 points to lead Roeper (9-13). The Roughriders were 20-for-27 shooting free throws.

Garrett Ross scored 18 to pace Waterford Lakes. Jake Doetsch added 15 points, but the rest of the Lakers’ lineup combined for just 11 points. WOLL shot only 6-for-18 from the foul line.
