MONDAY’S BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Brandon, Holly split behind pair of no-nos; Avondale clubs Athens
HOLLY — Ortonville Brandon and Holly took turns Monday posting pitching gems, as the neighboring rivals each picked up no-hitters from their starters in a flint Metro League twinbill split Monday in Holly.
The opener saw Holly’s Joel Perry fire a no-hitter, striking out seven and walking five in a 5-0 shutout of the Blackhawks. Perry also smacked an RBI double and Austin Cavender finished 2-for-3 for Holly (1-1, 1-1).
Jack Hranec took the loss for Brandon (1-3, 1-1).
In Game 2, Brandon’s Max Wardell returned the favor with a no-hitter of his own for Brandon, which posted a 4-0 shutout. Wardell struck out 10 and walked four, while he also added two hits in the nightcap. Hranec was 2-for-3 with an RBI in Game 2 for Brandon.
AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 13, TROY ATHENS 5: Avondale pushed eight runs across the plate in the first three innings and never looked back in this OAA Blue Division victory Monday.
Travis Janes was 2-for-3 with four RBI and Jacob Adams was also 2-for-3 and drove in four more runs for the Yellowjackets (3-4, 1-1), who gave up only seven hits in the contest.
Mike Kefteloot struck out four and walked one over five innings of work for Avondale.
Justin Duvant was 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in another for Athens (1-3, 1-1).
