Auburn Hills Avondale

HEAD COACH: Stew Kowalski, second season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 4-12-0, 0-6-0 OAA White Division (seventh).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in D-2 pre-regional (17-1).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA White Division; MHSAA Division 2.

RETURNING STATERS: Peter Kowalski, sr. A (All-OAA; leading scorer); Victor Fawaz, sr. M; Hyunjae Song, sr. G (All-OAA); Jess Shelton, sr. D; George Fonville, soph. A; JD Bootka, sr. D; Andrew Reed, sr. D.

OTHER RETURNEES: Navnoor Alkuah, sr. A; Rio Sacco, jr. M; Peter Gonal, sr. M; Chandler Swink, sr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: There are 13 newcomers on a 24-man roster.

KEY LOSSES: Graduated four starters.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: Several years ago, Avondale had a small club team that disappeared quickly. Two years ago, it came back and last season, Avondale brought the sport into a varsity program and the Yellowjackets won four games. This team returns seven starters and 11 total players with varsity experience, which should help Avondale be more competitive in its second varsity season. The coaching staff is hoping that there are a couple diamonds in the rough amongst the 13 newcomers that could help add to the win total this season.

Clarkston

HEAD COACH: Brian Kaminski, eighth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 16-3-0, 7-0-0 OAA Red Division (first).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. West Bloomfield (19-3); def. Brighton (129-9); lost to Birmingham Brother Rice in D-1 regional finals (19-4).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA Red Division; MHSAA Division 1.

RETURNING STATERS: Evan Kniesel, sr. M/A (Albion; All-State Second Team); A.J. Schlaff, sr. D (Albion).

OTHER RETURNEES: Preston Haven, sr. LSM; Connor Ward, jr. A; Connor Dziewet, jr.  A; Kyle O’Grady, sr. M (Albion); Scott Allen, jr. D; Reid Kaminski, jr. M; Jordan Moore, sr. M; Jake Hendricks, jr. G; Jim McKillop, jr. LSM.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Austin Egler, soph. M; Keaton Mitchell, fr. M; Andrew Williamson, soph. A.

KEY LOSSES: Kevin O’Grady, A; Travis Craft, M (Albion); Jordan Kincaid, A (four-year varsity starter); Kevin Horton, A (Michigan State); Nick Demattia, LSM (UD-Mercy); Ethan Frick, A; Nick Schuster, M (Alma College); Sam Moore, M (Ferris State); Mike Vanderweel, M; Brad Leuenhagen, M; Adam Gohl, G (Lawrence Tech).

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: A 34-5 record the past two years proves that this program is now one of the better teams in Division 1. The Wolves lost, convincingly, the past two years to eventual D-1 state champion Birmingham Brother Rice in the regional finals, but considering that Rice has not lost to a Michigan school in a decade, that is not a bad thing. Clarkston graduated a ton of firepower to graduation, but with a deep talent pool and plenty of players waiting in the wings, this team could very well be a top-10 team in Division 1 again this season. If the Wolves could be separated from Brother Rice in the postseason, then a possibly Final Four run in the future could be a possibility.

Lake Orion

HEAD COACH: Brad Thomas, third season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 14-5-0, 5-0-0 OAA White Division (first).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Waterford Unified (10-1); lost to Midland Dow in D-1 regional semifinals (11-4).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA Red Division; MHSAA Division 1.

RETURNING STATERS: Zach Miller, sr. A (All-State Honorable Mention); Nick Booker, sr. M (All-State Honorable Mention); Nick Knitter, sr. D; Joe Friedman, jr. D; Mitch Leahey, sr. D; Devon Flucher, jr. G.

OTHER RETURNEES: Nick DeAngelis, sr. M; Mike Gorsick, sr. D; Joe Goodrich, sr. M; Kyle Pillivant, jr. A; Riley McGee, sr. G; Tanner Seibold, jr. M; Mitch Holt, sr. LSM; Dimitri Grannis, jr. D; Joe Stanley, sr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Dom Giovanazzo, jr. M; David Finneran, jr. LSM.

KEY LOSSES: Brad Bogus, A; Jake Berkal, G; Sean Raymor, D; Ian Schlitt, D.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES:Lake Orion enters its seventh season coming off back-to-back OAA White Division championships. the Dragons will play a much tougher schedule in 2013 with the hopes of winning a couple of more postseason games as a result. This program has come a long ways in its first six seasons. Now, it’s time for the Dragons to find a way to move into the state’s elite programs in the next few years. There is 29 players on this year’s roster, proving that there is still plenty of buzz for a sport now established at the school.

HERE’S THE SCOOP: Nick Booker and Lake Orion have won back-to-back OAA White Division league titles and look to continue its climb up the charts this season as a program to be reckoned with in the near future. File Photo

Oxford

HEAD COACH: Greg Normand, second season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 11-8-0, 4-2-0 OAA White Division (third).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Farmington in D-2 pre-regional (7-2).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA White Division; MHSAA Division 2.

RETURNING STATERS: Piper Thaler, sr. A/D (All-State Second Team; first All-State player in program history); Owen Bachusz, jr. A/M; Dominic Bilchini, jr. A; Bobby Carr, soph. LSM; Kyle Anderson, sr. D; Alex Schueter, jr. D; Jared Tasch, soph. G; Austin Kreshock, soph. A.

OTHER RETURNEES: Noah Grove, soph. M; Nathan Tilley, soph. M; Kevin Dutzy, sr. M; Joey Bonino, sr. M; Travis Simat ,jr. A; Scott Randall, soph. A; Adam Cole, sr. A;Ethan Duke, soph.; Lars Joergens-Kokate, soph. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jonathan Doslak, jr. M; Ryan Kimbrough, fr. M.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: Greg Normand, who has coached and officiated a number of sports in the area for more than 30 years at both the high school and collegiate level, came aboard last season to help a fledging program. What he did was build the program to its highest win total to date. In fact, the Wildcats, who had 12 freshmen and sophomore on varsity last season, recorded more wins than the previous three seasons combined. This season look for Oxford to be a contender in the OAA White Division after finishing in the cellar two years ago. There is plenty of young talent on this roster, so with the right draw, watch for this squad to win a game or two in the postseason.

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

HEAD COACH: Ron Hebert, fourth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 10-11-0, 3-1-0 CHSL-AA Division (tied-first).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Grosse Ile (14-0); def. Dexter (15-4); def. Warren DeLaSalle (10-2); lost to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central in D-2 state semifinals (11-2).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: CHSL-AA Division; MHSAA Division 2.

RETURNING STATERS: Kyle Beauregard, sr. A (missed most of last season with back injury); Gavin Bertram, jr. A (11 goals, 14 assists); Alec Naseef, sr. M (20 goals, 20 assists); Frank Sardelli, sr. M; Mark Thierbacker, jr.  M; Andrew Wodrich, sr. D; Ali Beydoun, sr. D; Reid Siano, jr. D; Zach Nantua, sr. G.

OTHER RETURNEES: Peter Eicchorn, soph. G.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Several unproven underclassmen.

KEY LOSSES: Dave Cedras, M (All-State First Team); Matt Sciatyzinski, D (All-State First Team); Jacob Edgar, D (All-State Second Team).

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: According to Coach Hebert, last year’s strengths is a weak spot and last year’s weakness is now a strong spot .Notre Dame Prep, blanketed by injuries last season, still jelled together to make a run at the D-2 final Four and that was with a young offense. Last year’s top defensemen graduated, so the Irish have some holes to plug in the backline. Regardless, this team has enough talent to make another deep run in the postseason and contend in the CHSL-AA Division again this season.

Rochester

HEAD COACH: David White, second season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 1-0-0 against varsity teams; played mostly junior varsity schedule.

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: First-year team; did not compete in state tournament.

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA White Division; MHSAA Division 2.

OTHER RETURNEES: There are 19 returning players.

KEY NEWCOMERS: There are three newcomers on the varsity roster and also a junior varsity.

KEY LOSSES: None.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: Last season, Rochester split off from Stoney Creek and played primarily a junior varsity schedule. The Falcons did defeat Auburn Hills Avondale, a fist-year varsity program, in its only varsity contest. This season, Rochester will compete its first full season of varsity play and will be in the OAA White Division for conference play. There are 19 eager players back from last season and plenty of buzz around the program, which has brought in in the athletes from a multitude of other sports.

Rochester Adams

HEAD COACH:

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 10-10-0, 3-5-0 OAA Red Division (sixth).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Royal Oak (11-4); def. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (11-7); lost to Birmingham- Detroit Country Day in D-2 regional finals (15-9).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA Red Division; MHSAA Division 2.

OTHER RETURNEES:

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES:

Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: David White, second season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 7-15-0, 1-6-0 OAA Red Division (seventh).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Sterling Heights Stevenson (16-5); lost to Utica Eisenhower in D-1 regional semifinals (18-6).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA Red Division; MHSAA Division 1.

RETURNING STATERS: Michael Angeli, sr. M; Areeya Forouzandeh, sr. M/F; Tanner Lafrance, sr. M;; John-Anthony Stepp, sr. A; Ross Payne, jr. G; Keivan Forouzandeh, jr. LSM.

OTHER RETURNEES:

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: Not only did Stoney Creek enter last season with many holes in its lineup, but the Cougars lost plenty of depth as Rochester High split off its program to drop the numbers. Can Stoney Creek rebound in 2013?

Troy

HEAD COACH: Nathan Reynolds, first season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 13-5-0, 5-3-0 OAA Red Division (fourth).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Harrison Twp. L’Anse Creuse (14-7); lost to Ann Arbor Pioneer in D-1 regional semifinals (11-2).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA Red Division; MHSAA Division 1.

RETURNING STATERS: Jay Darish, jr. M (verbal To University of Albany); Colin Mclean, sr. A; Justice Bigelow, jr. A/M; Dan Birkett, sr. G; Connor Hayden, sr. D (All-State Honorable Mention); Brian Johnson, sr. D (committed to Davenport University); Quinn Hayden, jr. D.

OTHER RETURNEES: Mike Olson, sr. M; Evan Williams, sr. LSM; Andres Salinas, jr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jacob Parry, soph. A; George Risca, jr. A; Brock Martin, soph. A; Joe Harden, jr. A; Chad Nichol, jr. A; Carson Berger, jr. M; Kyle Fietsam, soph. M; Jack Percy, soph. M; Joe Lee, soph. M; Bobby Noonansoph. M; Harry Stoolmiller, jr. M; Brian Barnett, jr. D; Mitch McGee, jr. D; Jon Hornsby, jr. D; Quinn Moran, soph. LSM; John Fuhrman, jr. LSM; Marek Nagy, sr. G.

KEY LOSSES: Nick Kondoleon (All-State Second Team; 90 points last season; Michigan State).

OUTLOOK/NOTEABLES: Troy had a grand turnaround last season after a pair of down years. With seven returning starters on a 28-player roster, there is some holdover talent and a nice batch of newcomers mixed into the batch. First-year coach Nathan Reynolds is looking to from the right unit that will keep this team relevant in the OAA and possibly win a few postseason games at the end.

Troy Athens

HEAD COACH: Justin Suarez, first season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 9-11-0, 5-2-0 OAA Red Division (third).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Romeo (17-7); lost to Utica Eisenhower in D-1 regional semifinals (7-6).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA Red Division; MHSAA Division 1.

RETURNING STATERS: Brad Barnhart, jr. G; Craig Bazin, jr. D; Danny Harris, sr. D; John-Claude Tohme, jr. LSM; Max Blank, sr. M; Matt Dougherty, sr. M.

OTHER RETURNEES: Jordan Small, sr. D; Luke Spinek, jr. D; Aaron Hazen, sr. D; Ian Munro, sr. A; Brendan Birney, sr. A; Chris Dowd, jr. M; Joe Thill, sr. M; Michael Bordas, sr. M; Eric Fluegge, sr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Matt Poulus, jr. A; Brennan McHugh, jr. M; Joe Coussens, jr. M; Nick Boynton, jr. M; Jake Nelson, jr. M; Luke Copley, soph. D; Alec Aretakis, jr. A.

KEY LOSSES: Lost back-to-back large graduation numbers of players.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: Two years removed from a Final Four appearance in Division 1 and Athens enters a season of unknowns. First, there is a new coach with a new system. Two, the Red Hawks have lost a plethora of talent the past two years. There is still some quality holdover talent and a solid cast of newcomers. What type of recipe this will brew will soon be learned in the upcoming weeks.
