If this team can actually remain healthy this season, something they have not been able to accomplish the past three years, then Lake Orion could challenge Clarkston, Troy and Troy Athens for a league championship this season. The Dragons also need to be more consistent, especially from the circle, if they are able to stay in the league title chance and win a district trophy in a very deep district.

Rochester

HEAD COACH: Laura Guzman, second season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 28-10, 8-4 OAA White Division (second).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 districts to Troy Athens.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: The Falcons finished second in the OAA-White last season and with a fine pitching staff and several key components back from last year, should be in the mix again for a league title. Rochester shot up from 15 wins to 28 wins over the past two years. This team has not won a district since 1995.

Rochester Adams

HEAD COACH: Fran Scislowicz, 26th season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 20-19, 6-6 OAA White Division.

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Auburn Hills Avondale (12-2); lost to Troy Athens in D-1 district finals to Troy Athens (9-0).

KEY LOSSES: Ashley Durand, 2B; Rebecca Camaiani, CF; Alexys Pacioni, RF; Alyse Wilson, 2B; Rebecca Camiani, RF; Kristen Koltvedt, P.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: Adams struggled out of the gate last season with a young team, going 1-12 in the season’s first month. By the end of the campaign, the Highlanders climbed out of the cellar and finished above five-hundred. A host of newcomers will try to help Adams stay in the top half of the OAA-White.

Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Jerry Price, third season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 20-18, 7-3 OAA Blue Division (third).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in D-1 district semifinals to Rochester (12-0).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA White Division; MHSAA Division 1.

RETURNING STARTERS: Jen Semaan, jr. SS (All-district; All-League; .452 BA; .515 OBP; five home runs; 44 RBI); Sara Beyer soph. P-3B (All-League); Casey Cribbs, soph. KEY NEWCOMERS: Sarah Newman, jr. INF-OF; Meghan Glaser, soph. P; Emily Glaser, jr. 1B-P; Charlotte Spehn, jr. OF.

KEY LOSSES: Jessica Lie, OF (All-League).

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: Stoney Creek climbed above the five-hundred mark last season for the first time in several years and looks to contend for a league championship this season. This is the 11th season for Stoney Creek softball and the program is long overdue to raise a championship banner of any kind. Could the Cougars emerge as the top team in the OAA-Blue this season?

Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest

HEAD COACH: Jeff Ludwig, ninth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 14-20, 2-8 MIAC Blue Division (fifth).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Auburn Hills Christian Academy (1-0, forfeit); def. Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes-Clarkston Everest Collegiate Unified in D-4 district finals (5-4); lost in D-4 regional semifinals to Fowler (13-3).

OTHER RETURNEES: Emily Kimmell, soph. CF; Ashley Gryzwac, soph. 1B; Emily Griffith, jr. SS.

KEY NEWCOMERS: The Crusaders have eight newcomers on the roster this season.

KEY LOSSES: Graduated five starters; Stephanie Smith, P-1B; Ashly Riethmeier, 1B; Marcella Bolen, CF-P.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: In a rebuilding season, the Crusaders actually won a district crown after several seasons with high-quality teams that could not get past the district hump. This season Northwest has multiple question marks, with returning players shifting positions and eight newcomers looking for playing time. The Crusaders will bump up to Division 3 for softball and baseball for the first time, creating a whole new list of challenges.

Troy

HEAD COACH: Tom Calnen

LAST SEASON’S RECORD:

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in D-1 district semifinals to Troy Athens (6-2).

CONFERENCE/DIVISION FOR 2013: OAA Red Division; MHSAA Division 1.

RETURNING STATERS: Jesse Pappas, sr. 1B-P; Katy Krajenta, sr. P-3B; Sally Muller, sr. OF; Cory Mittelbrun, jr. 1B-P;  Allie Cianciiolo, jr. OF (.465 BA); Ashley Messina, soph. C-INF;

OTHER RETURNEES: Hannah Emerick, sr. SS:

KEY NEWCOMERS: Sydney Heath, jr. OF (did not play high school softball the past two years; state qualifier in track the past two years; committed to Michigan State for softball): Taylor Schmidt, fr. P-INF.

KEY LOSSES: Kamryn LaCarter, SS; Laney Hart, 2B; Kristen Shetler, CF.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: For the first time in a decade, Troy did not win a district championship last season and the colts also finished third in the OAA-Red Division. For one of the area’s premier programs, getting rid of that bad taste in the collective mouths of the Colts should be one of the main goals. Troy will challenge Clarkston, Troy Athens and Lake Orion in the OAA-Red and be a factor come the postseason.

Troy Athens

HEAD COACH: Dave Marr, 37th season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 33-7, 10-0 OAA White Division (first).

LAST SEASON’S STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Troy (6-2); Def. Rochester Adams in D-1 district finals (9-0); lost to White Lake Lakeland in D-1 regional semifinals (12-0).

RETURNING STARTERS: Erica Siismets, sr. CF (.339 BA; 26 stolen bases); Jackie Klein, sr. 2B; Haley Zemmer, jr. P (.475 BA; 47 RBI; 19 extra base hits; 31 pitching wins; 323 strikeouts, 1.07 ERA); Mary Grace Stark, jr. 3B (gold-glove type infielder); Sarah Watson, jr. LF (.349 BA; 20 RBI); Amanda Mildfelt, jr. RF (.314 BA); Lauren Genereau, jr. 1B.

OTHER RETURNEES: Maddie Rizzo, sr. OF; Lauren Atwell, jr. OF; Stacy Gross, soph. OF.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Sam Stosiak, fr. SS; Jensen O’Branovic, soph. C; Melissa Doozan, soph. U; Avery Springer, fr. U.; Rebecca Bussa, soph. U; Julia Douglas, jr. OF.

KEY LOSSES: Melissa Palmer, SS (set numerous season, game and career school records; Western Michigan); Meg Richter, C.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: Troy Athens had its best season in decades in 2012, winning league and district titles in the same season for the first time. Seven starters and 10 total players are back. This team has been promoted to the OAA-Red this season after finishing undefeated in the OAA-White last season and will be instant challengers. Also look for the Red Hawks to contend for another district crown with an experienced group.

KEY LOSSES: Amy Wolanin, OF (All-District); Julie Mastromatteo, C-SS (All-League, All-District); Jessica Ebel, OF; Carly Bjanrnesen, OF.

OUTLOOK/NOTABLES: After going 36-6 and reaching the D-4 state quarterfinals in 2011, the Lakers dipped below .500 in 2012 and failed to advance out of the districts. This season most of the team is back along with the aid of a strong freshman class. The small-school powerhouse will not expect to be down for long and should contend for league and district titles this season.
