BASEBALL: Lake Orion rolls to district title
LAKE ORION — After losing the state tournament opener to Oxford two years ago, Lake Orion gained some postseason revenge on the neighboring Wildcats.
The state-ranked Dragons knocked out Oxford in a Division 1 district final Saturday, topping Oxford, 6-1.
Lake Orion (30-7) captured its second straight district title and advance to the Rochester regional next Saturday.
The Dragons plated a run in the first, two in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to put the Wildcats to bed. Oxford scored its sole run in the first frame.
Brad Schaenzer gained the win on the mound in the opener, striking out nine while giving up only three hits, three walks and one earned run.
At the plate, Roman Kuster finished 3-for-4, drove in a run and scored a run to pace the Dragons’ attack.
Nathan Morris, who recently returned from injury, pitched three innings and suffered the loss for Oxford.
Lake Orion opened the day with a 6-1 victory over Waterford Kettering, while Oxford routed Clarkston, a state-ranked team for parts of this season, 13-1.
Nick Deeg and Josh Bays were dominant against Kettering, combining for a two-hitter. Lake Orion broke open a 1-1 game with a five-run sixth inning.
