SOFTBALL: Lutheran Northwest surprises with district championship

ROCHESTER HILLS — Welcome to Division 3.

After always competing in Class D/Division 4 for 25 years, Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest was promoted to Division 3 for this year’s softball state tournament, thanks to a small enrollment hike.

The Crusaders still captured a district title for the second straight season/

Lutheran Northwest downed Madison Heights Bishop Foley, 8-6, in the district finals Saturday to advance to the regional round.

Ashley Grzywacz finsihed 3-for-4 with a three-run home run for Northwest (14-11). She drove in four runs total in the final. Brianna Neumeyer was 3-for-3 and drove in a run for the Crusaders.

Northwest scored once in the second, three in the third, single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and another two runs in the seventh to rally. The Crusaders picked up13 hits.

Bishop Foley, which defeated New Haven (20-3) in the first game, scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, then tied the game with three runs in the sixth.

In the second semifinal, Lutheran Northwest picked off Macomb Lutheran North, 6-1, to advance to the final. Caitlin Riethmeier finished 2-for-3 and drove in four runs for the Crusaders. Emily Kimmel reached base twice via walk, stole three bases and scored three runs,

Riethmeier helped her won cause by pitching seven strong innings, striking out seven against one walk and six hits.baseball - ball in grass
