BASEBALL: Rochester Stoney Creek repeats as district champion
ROMEO — For nine seasons, Rochester Stoney Creek suffered the same feat in the Division 1 baseball districts. The Cougars lost in the semifinals or finals each time, including blowing a late lead in the 2011 district finals.
In 2012, Stoney Creek finally claimed its first district crown and validated it with another district trophy Saturday at Romeo. The Cougars downed Romeo, which was state ranked at points this season, with a 5-1 victory in the semifinals, while topping Utica Eisenhower 11-5 in the finals.
Kyle Schweiger was dominant in the semifinals win over Romeo, striking out a career-best 15 Bulldogs, believed to be a single-game school record. Schweiger drove in two runs and Bailey Hall also had two RBI for Stoney Creek in the opener.
Against Eisenhower in the finals, Stoney Creek collected a total of 13 hits to aid its repeat cause. Nick Rangos, Joe Cox and Justin Allor each drove in two runs apiece to lead a balanced attack. Eric Gilgenbach was the winning pitcher.
The Cougars will take on rival Rochester Adams in a regional semifinal next Saturday at Rochester High. Hartland and Lake Orion will face off in the other semifinal.
