SOFTBALL: Troy freshman sparkles in Colts’ district triumph

TROY — Over the past two decades, Troy’s softball team has enjoyed numerous long postseason runs, many on the strength of dominant pitchers. On Saturday, the Colts saw the emergence of another lively arm.
Freshman Taylor Schmidt was near-brilliant in a pair of pitching wins on her home field.
Schmidt fired a no-hitter in a 3-0 victory over Rochester Adams in a Division 1 district final. That was preceded by a two-hitter in an 8-0 triumph over Troy Athens in the semifinals.
Schmidt struck out five in the finals, including the side in the sixth, and yielded just one walk.
Troy scored twice in the first and added another run in the second. Schmidt never allowed the Highlanders to post a threat. She allowed only two baserunners the whole game, one via walk and another on an error by the Troy shortstop.
Maggie Bohr was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Ashley Messina scored a run and had a hit for the Colts in the finals.
Natalie Kinnie suffered the loss for Adams, giving up eight hits, two earned runs and three walks.
Against Athens, Schmidt helped her own cause, by going 2-for-4 which included a home run and four RBI. From the pitcher’s circle, Schmidt was in complete control in the shutout, striking out 11 Red Hawks against seven walks and two hits. She didn’t allow the 10 baserunners to cross the plate.
After two scoreless innings, Troy broke free with a three-run third frame. The Colts tacked on five more in the sixth to put the finishing touches on some revenge after losing to Athens in last year’s districts.
Athens’ Erica Siimets, filling in for injured starter Haley Zemmer, took the loss for the Red Hawks, who had won a district last season for the first time in over a decade.
