ANN ARBOR — Pontiac Notre Dame Prep’s girls soccer team made a run to the state semifinals last season for only the second time in school history. The Fighting Irish enjoyed the trip so much that they have made their way back to the Final Four.
Notre Dame Prep, ranked third in Division 3 entering the postseason, downed Grosse Ile, 3-0, Friday, for the regional championship at Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard. The win delivered the Irish their first back-to-back regional titles
Notre Dame Prep defeated Grosse Ile, 4-1, last season for the regional crown. The school’s other regional crown came back in 2000.
The Fighting Irish’s opponent is Flint Powers Catholic, which defeated NDP in Last year’s state semifinals (2-0).
Notre Dame Prep’s other state semifinals appearance came in 2000 in Division 4, when the Irish lost to Birmingham Detroit Country Day (1-0).
Taylor Timko, one of the state’s top juniors and top players overall who committed to the University of Michigan before last season, scored all three goals for NDP (20-2-2). She has 11 goals in the postseason.
Her first came in only the first minute, as she finished off a deflected shot by teammate Sarah Mazur.
Timko scored unassisted in the 48th minute and again in the 55th minute off a pass from
Hannah Zapcynski.
Alex Arnoldy and Megan Kraus combined for eight saves and the shutout for Notre Dame Prep.
Olivia Reckley made five saves for Grosse Ile (22-2-0), which entered the postseason as honorable mention in Division 3.
