SOFTBALL: Lutheran Northwest ousted by Cabrini in D-3 regional finals

MADISON HEIGHTS — Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest ‘s second straight trip to the regional round ended abruptly Saturday afternoon.
State power Allen Park Cabrini scored five runs in the decisive sixth and seventh innings to down the Crusaders, 6-1, in the Division 3 regional finals at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
Ashley Gorden laced a run-scoring double in the sixth frame to put fourth-ranked Cabrini up for good. Lea Ranspatch had two doubles and drove in two runs for the Monarchs.
Cabrini senior Paige Altherr gained the win from the pitcher’s circle, while Lutheran Northwest sophomore Peytin Riethmeir suffered the loss or the Crusaders.
Altherr scattered seven hits in the final and struck out three. Riethmeir had one strikeout and gave up eight hits.
Both pitchers recorded wins in the semifinals. Northwest pummeled Detroit Henry Ford Academy, 16-1, in four innings, while Cabrini slipped past Grass Lake, 1-0.
It marked Northwest’s first season in Division 3 after competing for 24 years in Class D or Division 4. The Crusaders won 13 of their final 15 games to finish 15-13 overall and matched their previous best tournament run posted back in 2007, when Northwest reached the D-4 regional finals.
Ashley Grzywacz finished 2-for-3 in the finals for Northwest against Cabrini.
Cabrini will face Reese in the state quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Saginaw Valley State.
ROCHESTER HILLS LUTHERAN NORTHWEST 16, DETROIT HENRY FORD ACADEMY 1: Lutheran Northwest had no problems with Detroit Henry Ford Academy, posting this regional semifinal win in just four innings.
Peytin Riethmeir gained the win from the circle thanks to nine strikeouts against three hits. She helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 with four RBI, including a home run.
Rachel Dober finished 3-for-3 and drove in three runs for Northwest.
