COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Francis relieved as Oakland coach
ROCHESTER HILLS — Veteran Beckie Francis has been relieved of her position as head coach of the Oakland University women’s basketball program effective immediately, announced by Director of Athletics Tracy Huth on Wednesday.
“We wish Coach Francis the best in her future endeavors,” said Huth.
Jeff Tungate will assume responsibility for the women’s basketball program until a new head coach is named. A national search for a permanent head coach will begin immediately.
Francis is the second-winningest coach in program history with a 227-152 record in 13 seasons, although the Grizzlies have struggled the past two years with injuries and legions of transfers of players to other schools.
Francis’ departure came following OU president Gary Russi and Francis’ husband announced his retirement effective Aug. 1.
She has coached two Kodak All-Americans and 11 All-Conference players during her tenure. Francis led Oakland to three consecutive postseason appearances, with two NCAA tournament bids and one WNIT appearance.
