BOYS SOCCER: Troy hands Oxford first loss
OXFORD — With one swift kick, Troy was able to hand Oxford its first loss of the season.
Mitch MacDonald finished off a cross by Jake Meissner, who fed the ball from the touchline and into the penalty box, which proved to be the game’s only goal in Troy’s 1-0 shutout of host Oxford Monday. MacDonald slipped a shot just past the outstretched hands of Oxford sophomore goalkeeper Connor Bandel in the 70th minute.
Ben Holland made two saves and Colin MacKillop added another save to share the shutout for Troy (3-4-2).
Bandel finished with six saves for Oxford (7-1-0), which had a great late opportunity blocked by MacKillop that could have tied the score.
“The boys played an excellent game,” said Oxford coach John Thaler. “I was very proud of their performance today. We kept to our game plan and had our chances to score. They kept the game close and were never intimidated. Our hard work and mental toughness shone through. Even though we came up short this was a great opportunity for us. We realized we can hold our own with a great team. Again, I’m very proud of our performance today.”
