ROCHESTER HILLS — Since 2008, no team from the OAA Red Division has defeated Lake Orion and Clarkston except for each other. That streak came to an end Saturday night.
Stoney Creek recorded perhaps the biggest win of its short, 12-season history by rolling over previously-unbeaten Lake Orion, 36-7, in an OAA Red Division showdown.
The Cougars (4-0, 3-0), who finished just 1-8 two seasons ago, never trailed the Dragons, who reached the Division 1 Final Four in 2012. Stoney Creek led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter and piled it on from there.
It marked the first time Lake Orion had lost a league game other than to Clarkston since 2007, which was a 21-7 setback to Rochester Adams in Week 3 of that season. Southfield Lathrup defeated Clarkston in 2008 before the streak started.
Stoney Creek, meanwhile, is off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2007, also the last time the Cougars reached the state playoffs.
After Stoney Creek and Lake Orion traded off first-quarter touchdowns — Justin Allor scored on a 9-yard run for Stoney Creek and Zak Arnold a 27-yard sprint for Lake Orion — the Cougars took a10-7 advantage when Alex Schnurr drilled a 42-yard field goal early in the second quarter.
Stoney Creek would not trail again, as those three points kickstarted 30 unanswered points by the Cougars, who lost 42-7 to the Dragons last season in the two teams’ very first meeting.
Joe Cox added a 1-yard plunge and Schnurr split the uprights from 26 yards out to push the lead to 20-7 at the half.
In the third quarter, Stoney Creek continued to pile on the points, as Schnurr connected on a 28-yard field goal try, Allor busted loose for a 51-yard touchdown run and Scott Reader scampered into the end zone from 8 yards out to cap the scoring drives for the Cougars.
Schnurr hit four extra points attempts as part of a 13-point night for the Cougars. Allor finished 12-for-16 passing for 134 yards, while he rushed six times for 84 more yards to lead the Cougars’ offense.
