DEARBORN — In a game of musical chairs, there has been a revolving door in the top spot of the Division 1 girls golf rankings since August. In fact, the whole top 10 has become an ever-changing cluster of evenly-matched teams.

This week Troy took over the No. 1 spot in the top 10 and the Colts validated that ranking Friday.

The Colts edged previously-ranked Grosse Pointe South, 333-337, to win the regional title at Dearborn Country Club and claim what is believed to be the school’s first regional crown.

Host Dearborn finished a distant third at 363 to earn the third and final qualifying spot for the Lower Peninsula Division 1 state finals Oct.18-19 at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers West Golf Course. The top three teams and the top three individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the state finals.

“I think we’ll know for sure once we add the trophy to the case,” smiled Troy coach John Getzan of the title. “We might have won one years ago, but not since I’ve been here and for the other years shortly before I became coach. We’ve been close before. I just think it’s nice to get through because we just missed last season.”

Troy had all five golfers shoot between 78 and 90 and finish in the top 25 to lead the 14-school field.

“Anytime you can have two players shoot in the 70s and two more in the 80, in girls golf that’s pretty good,” said Getzan. “We’re fortunate to have five quality golfers. We had our No. 5 shoot a 90 and that’s not even part of our team score.”

Grosse Pointe South’s Lily Pendley shot a one-over round of 73 to earn medalist honors. Troy Athens’ Jennifer Yang and Grosse Pointe South’s Shield Yenley both carded rounds of 76s to finish tied for second.

Troy’s Naomi Kim (78), Jennifer Gui (79), Hannah Ma (88) and Amanda McCafferty (88) combined for the Colts’ team score.

“This is the fourth time in five years that we’ve qualified, and that’s a tribute to the girls we’ve had on this team,” said Getzan. “I think the competition we face and the tournaments we play in helped us prepare for this. We play in the OAA Red Division — and the OAA-Red is very tough. We had four of the seven teams get through this season. Plus, we’ve played a lot of good teams. The girls are used to going out and playing with good players all season.”
