COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Indiana cruises past Oakland in opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Olivia Nash finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her ninth career double-double but the Oakland women’s basketball team (0-1) fell at Indiana (1-0) by the score of 85-55 Saturday night at Assembly Hall. The Golden Grizzlies were outrebounded 50-30.

“I told the team afterwards that a lot of positives came from this as we were down 13 at halftime and 12 or 13 with 11 minutes left in the second half but we just couldn’t hit that big shot or get that big rebound,” said Oakland head coach Jeff Tungate. “To come on the road and run our offense in a Big Ten arena and get to the foul line 26 times is a great sign for us and we were very good in spurts.”

Kim Bee and Elena Popkey finished with 10 points each to round out double-figure scoring for the Golden Grizzlies. Bee finished 4-of-5 from the floor with a team-best three blocks and Popkey added a team-best two steals.

Oakland shot just 33 percent in the game including 16 percent from behind the arc while Indiana shot 49 percent from the floor. The Hoosiers outscored the Golden Grizzlies 44-26 in the paint.

IU’s Larryn Brooks led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting and Tabitha Gerradot added 14 points. Indiana’s bench outscored Oakland 34-12.

The Golden Grizzlies trailed by 13 at the half, as the lead was up to 16 until Nash hit a layup and Peyton Apsey hit two free throws to make the halftime score 48-35.

Oakland was unable to cut the gap in the second half as IU shot 50 percent (15-30) from the floor including five 3-pointers. OU was within 15 points with 11 minutes remaining until the Hoosiers closed the game on a 22-9 run.

The OU women’s basketball team will start a three-game home stand starting on Tuesday when they host UCF beginning at 7 p.m. inside the Athletics Center O’rena.NOSs.HoopsIcon-2
