Clarkston

HEAD COACH: Tim Wasilk, ninth season (116-65).

2012-13 RECORD: 22-2, 14-0 OAA Red Division (first).

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Lake Orion (50-16); Oxford (36-17, district finals); def. Utica Ford II (48-30); lost in Class A regional finals to Birmingham Marian (40-37);

RETURNING STARTERS: Erika Davenport, 6-0 jr. C (18 ppg, 13 rpg, All-State First Team); Kacy Robinson, 5-8 sr. G (fourth-year player); Carly Giroux, 5-7 sr. G/F.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Jessica Altene, 5-8 jr. F; Mariah Hood, 5-5 soph. G; Alaina Cook, 5-10 sr. F; Remia Bryant, 5-6 sr. F.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Kayla Russell, 5-7 soph. G; Taylor Mullins, 5-7 jr. G.

KEY LOSSES: Delaney Kenny, 5-9 G (Northwood); Erin Davenport, G (Macomb CC); Patrice Matthews, F (Kellogg C.C.).

OUTLOOK: Clarkston has resurfaced as a powerhouse program the past 4-5 years with a steady flux of talent. This year’s team brings in a nice mix of experience with three returning starters and seven total returnees along with a nice mixture of newcomers that will help fill in nicely. Placing the Wolves into the OAA-Red title chase as well as being a team that can again reach the Sweet 16 or better is a no-brainer as they counter with one of the state’s top 25 players. If the depth develops, watch out.

Clarkston Everest Collegiate

HEAD COACH: Erin Van Wagoner, fourth season.

2012-13 RECORD: 18-6, 10-0 CHSL-A West Division (first).

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Burton Genesee Christian (60-21); Burton Faith Christian (59-13); Burton St. Thomas More Academy (68-45) for district title; lost to Lansing Christian (53-33, regional semifinals).

RETURNING STARTERS: Lucia Westrick, 6-0 sr. C (11.1 ppg, 11.2 rpg) (All-State Honorable Mention Class D); Mary Jo Allen, 5-11 sr. F (8.3 ppg. All-League); Angelina Mastromatteo, 5-7 sr. PG (7.0 ppg, 4.0 apg); Kersten Engle, 5-11 sr. F (currently injured); Ashley Lowney, 5-7 jr. G (shot 52 percent form 3-point range).

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Claire Lasceski, 5-5 jr. G.

KEY LOSSES: None.

OUTLOOK: Entering its fourth season as a program, the Mountaineers have won division championships the past three years and even captured its first district title last season. Even with Engle likely gone for the season with a knee injury, there is still plenty of experience and a team that could make another leap forward  and advance even further in the tournament. This is a program quickly on the rise.

Clarkston Springfield Christian

HEAD COACH: James Day, sixth season.

2012-13 RECORD: 12-7, 4-0 FBAC Blue Division (first).

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Milford West Highland Christian (60-25, MACS-II semifinals); lost in Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division II state finals to Kinross Maplewood Baptist (67-37).

RETURNING STARTERS: Emily Grant, sr. F; Heather Key, soph. G.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES:

KEY NEWCOMERS:

KEY LOSSES: Savanah Berlinski, 6-0 C.

OUTLOOK:

Holly

HEAD COACH: David Hall

2012-13 RECORD: 18-4, 11-3 Flint Metro League (second).

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A district semifinals (51-47)

RETURNING STARTERS: Allyssa Copley, 6-1 sr. F/C (13.0 points, 10 rebounds, w2.0 steals; signed with Cleveland State); Abby Lewandowskli, 5-10 sr. F (7.3 points, 6.0 rebounds); Kaitlyn Smith, 5-9 soph. G (9.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.2 steals); Jenna Pepper, 5-6 soph. G.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Brooke Jackman, 5-9 jr. F; Katie Ordiway, 5-6 sr. G; Michelle Luchow, 5-8 jr. F; Shayla Lipischak, 5-7 jr. G.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Paige Reed, 5-7 fr. G; Courtney Accorsi, 5-10 soph. F (currently injured); Amanda Pucher, 5-9 jr. G; Emily Trest, 5-10 jr. G.

KEY LOSSES: Only lost one starter.

OUTLOOK: Holly will join Fenton and Clio in the run for the FML cup and will do so with a bulk of its talent back, including a D-I player in the post, four returning starters and depth at guard. Holly finished second in the league last season and is trying to win its first league in decades. The Bronchos must play up to their ability on a consistent level to emerge on top.

Lake Orion

HEAD COACH: Steve Roberts, 16th season.

2012-13 RECORD: 4-17, 3-11 OAA White Division (seventh).

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A district semifinals to Clarkston (50-16).

RETURNING STARTERS:

OTHER KEY RETURNEES:

KEY LOSSES:

OUTLOOK:

Lake Orion Baptist

HEAD COACH: Janet Noruk, 12th season.

2012-13 RECORD: 4-18, 2-2 FBAC Blue Division.

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS Division I quarterfinals to Rochester Hills Christian.

RETURNING STARTERS: Breanne Watterworth, 6-3 sr. C (25.5 points, 25 rebounds, 8.0 blocks; signed with Cedarville College); Noelle Streetman, 5-11 sr. F; Rachel Brundage, 5-6 jr. G; McKenna Cameron, 5-6 soph. PG.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Angie Cone, 5-11 jr. F; Megan Carawford, 5-7 jr. F (currently injured).

KEY NEWCOMERS: Keenan Cameron, fr. PG; Abigial Strunk, fr. G; Allison Streetman, fr. F; Jessica Noruk, fr. G.

KEY LOSSES: Kathy McDonald, 5-6 G.

OUTLOOK: With one of the state’s better post players in Watterworth, a scoring and rebounding machine, the Lions could emerge as a dangerous team if they improve at ball-handling and decision making. There is plenty of height with three players standing at least 5-11. If they can cut down on turnovers and consistently get the ball inside the post, Lake Orion Baptist may be the team nobody wants to play later in the season.

Ortonville Brandon

HEAD COACH: Andrew Teberain, fourth season.

2012-13 RECORD:

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT:

RETURNING STARTERS: Kaitlyn Hendershott, 5-8 jr. G (all-league).

KEY LOSSES: Maddie Blocki, F.

OUTLOOK: With six of the top seven players back, there’s no reason not to believe that they Irish can challenge for division and district titles this winter. NDP has one of Michigan’s top 100 players in LewAllen and a very athletic team full of multi-sport athletes.

Rochester

HEAD COACH: Adam Sheldon, fifth season.

2012-13 RECORD:

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A pre-district to Utica Ford II (55-48).

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A pre-district to Romeo (49-32).

RETURNING STARTERS: Amber Jamison, 6-0 jr. C (12.0 points, 11 rebounds, 3.0 steals a game, plus 77 total blocks); Jenny Rosonke, 5-10 sr. G (10.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 3e.0 steals, all-league); Raiven Owusu, 5-11 jr. G (12 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, all-league).

KEY LOSSES: Lauren Finkelstine, 5-5 G; Brittany Boyle, 5-9 F; Katie Milkie, 5-8 F.

OUTLOOK: Adams should be one of the top teams in the OAA White Division this season, with great size, quickness and athleticism. Could this be the team that brings the Highlanders back close to where this program was back in the 1990s, a top-20 program?

Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Brad Crighton, 12th season.

2012-13 RECORD:

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT: Def. Utica Eisenhower (41-26); def. Sterling Heights Stevenson (56-25); Llost in Class A district finals to Utica Ford II (40-22).

RETURNING STARTERS: Kindra Armitage, 54- sr. G; Jenna Porter, 5-11 jr. G/F; Ashley Parker, 5-11 jr. F/C; Courtney Patton, 5-3 jr. G; Veronica Cowan, 5-5 jr. F/G.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Karen Crile, 5-6 fr. F; Makayla Smith, 5-6 fr. G/F; Shelby Brown, 5-3 fr. G.

KEY LOSSES: None.

OUTLOOK: In a rebuilding campaign last winter, the Eagles still won a conference crown and reached the MACS-I semifinals, a far cry from where this program was as recent as seven years ago when they finished winless. With all five starters back, RHC should again contend for a conference crown and is capable of making another deep run in the MACS-I tourney.

Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest

HEAD COACH: Randy Tyler, second season.

2012-13 RECORD:

2013 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class C pre-district to Madison Heights Bishop Foley (53-25).

RETURNING STARTERS: Sarah Bishop, 5-8 sr. G; Kristen Dongon, 5-2 jr. G.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Danielle Akrawi, 5-6 sr. F; Rebecca Awabdeh, 5-7 sr. F.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Phoebe Tandoc, 5-3 soph. G; Abigail Black, 5-5 soph. F; Emily Fitzgerald, 5-9 fr. F.

KEY LOSSES: Lianna Sprankle, 5-7 G (all-league).

OUTLOOK: The Bruins put it all together when it counted most last March, winning the MACS-I state title after an up-and-down regular season. Overall numbers are down and there are only four returning players, but the Bruins do have some experience with fourth-year starter in Sarah Bishop leading a solid cast of players. Bethany Christian has finished in the top two in league play every year in the past decade and will likely be in the hunt again this season.

KEY LOSSES: Ava Doetsch, 5-8 G (All-State); Lexie Robak, 5-10 G (All-State); Jessica Parry, 5-7 F (All-State); Haley Howell, 5-10 F.

OUTLOOK: After four straight trips to the Class D state finals, winning three straight from 2010-2012 and finishing as the runner-up last year, the Lakers enter the season with plenty of uncertainty. More than a half-dozen All-State players have departed the last three seasons and the Lakers graduated 85 percent of their scoring from a year ago.
