OXFORD — If Friday and Saturday’s performance is any indication, than Novi Detroit Catholic Central will still be a major player this season in the hunt for wrestling state championship again this season.

The Shamrocks, the defending Division 1 state champions who are ranked in the top 25 in the nation, joined some elite company Saturday night by winning their fifth straight Oakland County Championships trophy at Oxford Middle School with an impressive 307 team total.

Catholic Central, which moved into Oakland County six seasons ago, could not compete in the county tournament its first year due to a prior commitment. Since then, the Shamrocks have not lost a county meet and joined Hazel Park and Clarkston as the only schools to win five or more straight county titles in the 54 years of the prestigious tournament.

“When you think of all of the great teams that have won here, it’s quite an honor,” said Catholic Central coach Mitch Hancock. “It goes down to the kids. They put in all of the hard work in the offseason and in the season and it shows in a tournament like this.”

Oxford finished second for the sixth year in a row with 247 points, while Clarkston (177.5), Rochester (172.5), Ortonville Brandon (170), Walled Lake Central (166), Walled Lake Northern (143), West Bloomfield (138.5), Holly (138) and Waterford Kettering (133) rounded out the top 10 in a field of over 40 schools.

The Shamrocks had top-eight placers in 11 of the 14 weight classes and did so with two key wrestlers out of the lineup with injuries.

“I’m proud of the guys that stepped into the lineup and did a quality job,” praised Hancock. “It speaks volumes about our guys’ hard work, their work in the offseason. They take pride in winning this tournament.”

Catholic Central racked up four winners and two runners-up on the day, led by champions Myles Amine (140), Malik Amine (145), Nick Bennett (152) and Drew Garcia (171), who all reached the winners circle for the Shamrocks.

For Bennett, the win was especially rewarding due to the fact that he spent the last two years in Texas after being raised in Michigan and returning to a tradition-rich program such as Catholic Central.

“It’s great to be back here and part of this,” said Bennett. “I know this team has high expectations. This was a lot of fun.”

Oxford, which failed to reach the Final Four at last year’s state tournament for the first time in six years, fought its way to its runner-up finish among the heavy hitters.

“I think this is the sixth straight year we’ve been second at the county,” said Paul McDevitt, who returned to the head coaching position after a six-year hiatus. “We’ve been really high for the past several years but not enough to catch Catholic Central.  We’re happy to close the gap on Catholic Central and we’ve distanced ourselves from the rest of the field.”

Michigan State-bound Waterford Kettering’s Matt Okaiye edged Catholic Central’s Jimmy Russell in the 215-pound finals, 5-3, in one of the many tight matches in the final round.

“This was my goal all along, and now I want to take state,” said Okaiye.

Rochester’s Shwan Shadaia won his second straight county title in convincing fashion, topping Walled Lake Central’s Alex Sovel, 11-3, in the finals at 189.

“I had a slow start to the season with a couple of losses, but now I am rounding back in to shape,” said Shadaia, who placed at the county for the fourth straight season. “I am looking to get back (to state) and win it all again.”

West Bloomfield’s Ross Bohro posted an upset, blocking Catholic Central’s Evan Toth from winning his fourth straight crown in the 130-pound division, posting a convincing 10-2 triumph.

“I went out there and wrestled great,” said Bahro.”I know people were talking about (Toth going for four titles). I had something to prove.”

Oxford had two winners on the day, led by Zach Wood (285) and Alex Hrisopoulos (112). Wood defeated Rochester’s Cameron Daniels, 2-1.

“We’ve had a lot of close matches,” said Wood of his rivalry with Daniels which dates back two years. “I got him this time.”

Andrew Price of Rochester Stoney Creek had another thrilling win, topping Oxford’s Wes Maskill, 5-4, in the 160-pound finals. Walled Lake Central’s Ben Freeman (103) and Daniel Shear (119), Stoney Creek’s Kyle Noonan (125) and Troy Athens’ Thomas Keyes (135) rounded out the winners.
