GIRLS BASKETBALL: Oxford wins first league title since 2001
OXFORD — For the first time since the fall of 2001, Oxford has been crowned a league champion in girls basketball.
The Wildcats wrapped up the regular season Friday by dropping neighboring rival Lake Orion, 41-22, in an OAA White Division contest.
Oxford, which carries a 16-4 overall record into Monday’s Class A districts, finished a perfect 10-0 in league play this season — the first conference championship since winning the Flint Metro League title in November of 2001 when girls basketball was still a fall sport in Michigan.
The Wildcats were led by senior forward Jessica Murphy, who netted a game-high 25 points with seven rebounds — outscoring the Dragons by herself. Senior point guard Cherilyn Banas contributed seven assists.
Oxford held Lake Orion to single-digits scoring in each of the four quarters. Leading 9-8 after the first quarter, the Wildcats went on a 16-6 run in the second period for a 25-14 halftime advantage. Oxford outscored the Dragons 16-8 in the second half to make it a 19-point win.
In the loss, the Dragons were led by Evelyn Wischmeyer with 12 points.
