KLAA-NORTH DIVISION
SCHOOL: Walled Lake Central
NICKNAME: Vikings
HEAD COACH: Bob Meyer, 15th season (60-54)
2014 RECORD: 9-3, 4-1 KLAA-North (tied-first)
POSTSEASON IN 2014: 2-1, lost in D-1 regional finals to Clarkston (40-22)
KEY PLAYERS: Ogundeji Adetokumbo, sr. DE (committed to Notre Dame); Ethan Rodriguez, sr. RB-DB; Ryan Kalis, sr. TE; Nick Tinson, sr. OL-DL
KEY LOSSES: Nick Krumm, QB (Michigan State); Drake Temple, S (Hillsdale); Cody Patterson, DB (Northwood)
NOTABLES: With six returning starters back on offense and five on defense, there will be a mix of experience and youth this season for the Vikings, who reached the Elite Eight last season in D-1. WL Central has one of the state’s top defensive players and a host of other playmakers on both sides of the football who should keep the Vikings quite relevant in 2015.
SCHOOL: Walled Lake Northern
NICKNAME: Knights
HEAD COACH: Brett Moore (34-31)
2014 RECORD: 4-5, 1-4 KLAA-North (fifth)
POSTSEASON IN 2014: None
KEY PLAYERS: A.J. Chuchla, sr. RB; Ray Abbott, sr. SB; Adam Rabaut, sr. SB-DB; Duval Green, sr. DB; Joe Long, sr. DE;
KEY LOSSES: Brendan O’Donnell, QB; Jamie Demers, OT; Jake Boerner, C; Jordan Grodman, DB
NOTABLES: Entering its 14th school year and 13th as a varsity program, WL Northern is hoping to rebound from a down year in 2014. The Knights made the postseason in 2012 and 2013 only to dip under the radar last season. With seven starters back on offense and six on defense, there’s reason to believe that last season was a hiccup. WL Northern was hit hard by injuries last season, but younger players gained some valuable playing time which should bode well this season. The Knights are one of the more experienced team in the KLAA.
SCHOOL: Walled Lake Western
NICKNAME: Warriors
HEAD COACH: Michael Zdebski (127-54).
2014 RECORD: 9-2, 4-1 KLAA-North (tied-first)
POSTSEASON IN 2014: 1-1, lost in D-2 district finals to Farmington Harrison (10-9)
KEY PLAYERS: Kyle Thomqas, sr. QB (over 2,500 all-purpose yards); Jake Prokes, sr. TB; Dan Barrett, sr. C; Alex Gammo, sr. OG; Tyler Shreve, sr. OT-DT; Cody White, jr. SE; Darnell Lanier, sr. LB; Jackson Neracher, sr. DB; Bryce Brand, sr. DL (All-State transfer from Detroit U-D Jesuit); Ryan Steiner, sr. DL; John Camilleri, sr. K (All-State Dream Team)
KEY LOSSES: John Witkowski, SL (All-State, Mt. Union); Matt Jenkin, OL; Zach Johnson, DL: Marcus Bailey, SE (Wayne State).
NOTABLES: With six starters back on both sides of the football and two highly-touted recruits, the Warriors have the capabilities to be very good. The Warriors are in a very competitive division of the KLAA so top performers will need to shine in order for WL Western to pull away from the pack.
SCHOOL: Waterford Kettering
NICKNAME: Captains
HEAD COACH: Shaun Warner
2014 RECORD: 5-4, 2-3 KLAA-North (fourth)
POSTSEASON IN 2014: None
KEY PLAYERS: Jacob Netscke, sr. Henry Mitzerak, sr. QB; Chandler Johnson, sr. OL; Evan King, sr. RB; Jacob Mortimore, sr. LB; Jacob Netscke, sr. DB (All-State in track); Matt Hall, sr. NGwi
KEY LOSSES: Danotiss Smith, RB (all-State in football and track); Keyron Payne, DB; Austin Wood, RB-LB
NOTABLES: The bad news is that the Captains must replace two 1,00-yard rushers. The good news is that six starters are back on both sides of the ball and there is still plenty of speed and athleticism in the lineup. Kettering is coming off its first back-to-back winning seasons since 1997 and 1998 and will not be a pushover as it was in a 14-year span of losing seasons (1999-2012).
SCHOOL: Waterford Mott
NICKNAME: Corsairs
HEAD COACH: Chris Fahr, fourth season (40-46 at multiple schools)
2014 RECORD: 6-4, 4-1 KLAA-North (tied-first)
POSTSEASON IN 2014: Lost in D-1 pre-district to Walled Lake Central (35-14)
KEY PLAYERS: Corbin Moorer, sr. RB (995 rushing yards); Avery Carter, sr. WR-DB; Trey Christian, sr. LB; Jimmy McFadden, sr. LB Avery Carter, sr. FS; Eric Bilvkosky, sr. OL; Jimmy Shadwell, sr. OL; Brendan Kennedy, sr. OL; Tyrese Mays, sr. CB-SL; Marco Quintero, jr. CB-RB; Zach Loll, jr. WR
KEY LOSSES: Dakota Kupp, QB *All-State, Central Michigan); Randy Bicknell, RB; Adam Upleger, LB (All-State); Louy Compton, LB (Ellsworth College)
NOTABLES: After six straight losing seasons, Mott made an about-face turnaround last season. As part of a reval of boys sports last season, the Corsairs have several multi-sport athletes on the roster, including several sprinters from a regional.
SCHOOL: White Lake Lakeland
NICKNAME: Eagles
HEAD COACH: Joe Woodruff, first season (128-68 overall)
2014 RECORD: 3-6, 0-5 KLAA-North (sixth)
POSTSEASON iN 2014: None
KEY PLAYERS: Adam Kleckner, sr. WR-DB; Jason Wooster, sr. RB-DB; Kyle Welling, sr. OL-DL
KEY LOSSES: Graduated seven starters from both sides of the football
NOTABLES: Behind a new coaching staff, Lakeland is trying to rebuild glory years. The Eagles reached the postseason from 2006-2008 but has not won over five games in any one season since then. Woodruff and staff are trying to identify players in each grade that you will help this program be consistently competitive.
