BOYS SOCCER: Utica Ford rallies past Troy Athens for district title
TROY — Troy Athens committed the cardinal sin on the soccer pitch Saturday: Yielding three goals after building a 2-0 advantage in a district final.
It turned out to be a lethal injection.
Fourth-ranked Utica Ford was the team that spoiled the Red Hawks’ postseason plans, rallying for a 3-2 victory over host Athens in a Division 1 district final in a battle of state ranked schools.
It marked the second time that sixth-ranked Athens has lost to Ford in a district final, the other being in 2006. The Red Hawks (14-3-5) lost in the district final for the second time in three seasons —Athens also lost to Utica, 3-2, in 2013 after entering the postseason unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the state.
This marked the first time Athens (14-3-5) gave up three goals in a game all season.
Robert Wist netted the game-tying and game-winning goals for Ford, the latter coming with 11:51 to play. Mr. Soccer candidate Javier Steinwascher, who set up the go-ahead goal, scored the first goal for the Falcons just before halftime on an assist from his brother, Alejandro Steinwascher.
Rudy Alvarado scored two first-half goals for Athens, which almost took a three-goal lead when Yousuf Zetuna rang a shot off the goal post.
Ford (14-1-2) advances to next Wednesday’s Fraser regional. The Falcons, who last won a district in 2012, picked up nine saves from goalkeepers Joseph Rosales and Frank Catanzaro in the win.
