LYON TWP. — Riley Robertson truly understands the legacy of all of the former standouts that have won captured an Oakland County championship in cross country over the years.
That legendary list of athletes that have gone on to win state titles and later enjoy successful careers in the NCAA collegiate level is staggering.
“There’s an amazing list of runners and I feel honored to be apart of that (group),” said Robertson, a junior from Waterford Mott.
Robertson, whose brother was a county runner-up two years ago, captured the individual girls crown Saturday at the 58th annual Oakland County Cross-Country Championships on the picturesque 3.1-mile course at Kensington Metropark.
Robertson took the lead after the two-mile mark and cruised to a comfortable win in 18:28.8. She finished second last October.
“(Winning this year) was the goal. I think I executed the race the way I wanted to,” offered Robertson. “It was a good day. The game plan was to go out conservative and take the lead around the two-mile spot and that’s what I ended up doing.”
Kyla Christopher-Moody of West Bloomfield finished a distant second (18:53.5), followed by White Lake Lakeland’s Madeline Rehm (18:53.9), Troy’s Megan Worrel (18:57.0), Mott’s Katie Osika (19:14.3), Birmingham Seaholm’s Emily Rooney (19:16.6), Holly’s Andrea Ruiz (19:18.0), Farmington’s Abby Inch (19:27.3), Lakeland’s Olivia Clymer (19:32.9) and Milford’s Victoria Heiligenthal in the top 10.
Meanwhile, Troy’s girls won their seventh all-time title with an impressive 71 points. Milford was second with 132 points, while Clarkston (141), six-time defending champion Seaholm (202), Waterford Mott (241), Lake Orion (241), Lakeland (257), Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (266), Berkley (273) and Oxford (305) in the top 10 of the team standings.
“Seaholm won the last six and we won three right before that, so it’s nice to be back on top I guess,” said Troy 13th-year head coach Matt Richardson.
“We got some girls out from volleyball, they were good volleyball transfers, and we’ve had some other girls coming up through the program,” continued Richardson. “We’ve been adding and adding girls and Meghan (Monaghan) transferred over from the Athens side of town to the Troy side of town. And we had Lauren Fulcher come over from the volleyball team this year. We finally have a very good lineup. I know that whatever meet we go to, we will be very competitive. We have strong and very deep lineup.”
Lakeland’s boys captured their seventh all-time title over a 31-year span, but first since 1997. The Eagles, the defending Division 1 state champions who were only fourth at the county last season, made up for it this year with 78 points, landing three runners in the top 20.
Powers Novi (151) and Milford (166) followed suit, while Oxford (170), Birmingham Brother Rice (173), Novi Detroit Catholic Central (222), Seaholm (245), Rochester Stoney Creek (250), Lake Orion (261) and Walled Lake Central (287) all cracked the top 10.
“A lot of the guys here today were part of the state championship team last year, so they have (big-meet) experience, said Lakeland coach Joe Verellen. “It’s been a lot of slow progression over the years to build the team back up. This particular race has kind of escaped us the last few years. Coming in here today, we were a little more relaxed than last year.
“It’s nice to win this meet again, because I know they won several (back in the 1990s),” added Verellen. “The guys stepped it up this year.”
Novi’s Gabriel Mudel posted the sixth-fastest county time at Kensington, clocking in at 15:51.3 to win by over six seconds. Harrison Grzymkowski of Lakeland was second in 15:57.8, as the only two runners to eclipse the 16-minute barrier.
Stoney Creek’s Harrison Steen (16:03.5), Farmington’s Nick Trevisan (16:06.8), Lakeland’s Drew Wenger (16:11.8), Brother Rice’s Michael Tremonti (16:17.1), Rochester’s Austin Remick (16:30.0), Seaholm’s George Nummer (16:34.0), Lake Orion’s Andrew Nolan (16:39.6) and Brother Rice’s Alec Miracle (16:41.0) were also amongst the leaders.
“I’ve heard about some of the legacy that some of the former Oakland County runners have left and I think I’m sixth all-time. The five guys ahead of me were all incredible runners,” smiled Mudel. “To be in that conversation with that incredible group is very much an honor for me.”
