Two years ago as a highly-rated sophomore, Eron ‘Roni’ Sylejmani led Richland Gull Lake to the Division 2 Final Four.

Understandably, he made the All-State First Team that season.

Last season, Sylejmani was back to his old tricks again, scoring 18 goals for the second straight season while helping the Blue Devils to a No. 1 ranking for part of the season and an undefeated regular season to boot. Gull Lake was upset in the district semifinals by Coldwater and Sylejmani was unable to deliver his team back to the state semifinals.

Now a senior, Sylejmani is one of the leading candidates for the 2020 Mr. Soccer award, given annually to the state’s high school player. He joins the likes of Brighton’s Josh Adam, Mattawan’s Joshua Filiputti, Berkley’s Jacob Schleicher, Troy Athens’ TJ Renaud and a host of other standouts in the discussion for the honor or for a spot on the prestigious 11-member All-State Dream Team.

Sylejmani turned down some chances to play for some MLS Academy programs around the country. He has already committed to Western Michigan University — the Bronchos have signed the past five Mr. Soccer winners  and could make it six if he earns the nod in 2020.

There are a host of other Division I and Division II college prospects who are enjoying phenomenal seasons so far who would nothing more than earn top honors.

This is a season where most schools in the Lower Peninsula will only have a six-week regular season, plus the 19-day state tournament. Schools in northern Michigan began playing games in late August.

Not much time to impress.

Below is a detailed list of the top high school players from all over the state, regardless of division or affiliation. High school and club coaches around the state submitted surveys about the top players and teams from around the mitten:

Mr. Soccer Candidates:

ERON RONI SYLEJMANI, Richland Gull Lake sr. M/F: Sylejmani scored 18 goals each of the last two seasons and helped his team to a cement a spot in the Division 2 top five the last two years. This season he has been on an offensive tear with 14 goals after two weeks of play and is trying to lead Gull Lake to its first state title since 1993. He demands respect whenever he touches the ball and has been identified as a potential high school All-American candidate as well. Sylejmani plays club ball for the Kalamazoo Kingdom.

JOSHUA FILIPUTTI, Mattawan sr. F: Lightning quick and powerful, Filiputti earned Division 2 All-State First Team and All-State Dream Team honors after a brilliant junior campaign that saw him lead the Wildcats to the Final Four. He tallied 24 goals with 17 assists but his stats don’t tell the whole story. A Division I college recruit and a key member of the Kalamazoo Kingdom U-18 club team that has succeeded at the national level in recent years, Filiputti just has the knack to score in the clutch.

TJ RENAUD, Troy Athens sr. F: The Red Hawks graduated 14 players, so Renaud will draw much more attention from the opposition’s top defender. The Michigan Jags club standout earned All-State First Team honors last season after scoring 14 goals. He is exceptionally quick and a gifted playmaker and scorer. Oakland and Western Michigan are amongst his pursuers.

JACOB SCHLEICHER, Berkley sr. M: After competing with the Vardar Academy as a freshman, Schleicher made the switch to his high school team and is a two-time All-State performer, making the Division 1 First Team last season. He is a gifted playmaker, lethal on free kicks and has great vision to be able set up teammates or strike the ball with authority.

JOSH ADAM, Brighton sr. D: One of the top players in his age group ever since he was in ninth grade, Adam recently committed to Michigan State after a host of D-I offers. If a defender is to win Mr. Soccer for the second straight year and for a third time in the last decade, Adam would be the top choice. This center back is a lockdown defender but capable of playing anywhere on the field. He notched five goals and three assists in the first couple weeks of the season coming out of the backfield which shows his versatility. He was only D-1 All-State Second Team last season playing in the state’s toughest district and regional. He anchored eight shutouts last season for a defense that allowed less than a goal a game.

NEXT 45 FIELD PLAYERS

6. JUAN DAVID ZAVALA, Grand Rapids Union sr. F/M: Zavala turned some heads this past winter at the Allstate Sueno Alianza National Showcase in Los Angeles and is now on the radar for several MLS Academy programs and Division I colleges. Already the most talented player to come through Union, Zavala was D-1 All-State Second Team last season.

7. CONNOR BURKETT, Mattawan sr. M: As an attacking midfielder, Beckett is almost always in the play as his 22 goals and 14 assists for a Final Four team indicates. Named D-2 All-State First Team, the Kalamazoo Kingdom product is one of many Division I prospects on this list, as he is equally dangerous as a set-up player and goal scorer.

8. NICK ROCKAFELLOW, Canton sr. M: Rockafellow had a breakout year as a junior, earning D-1 All-State Second Team honors coming out of the rugged KLAA-West. This year Rockafellow should move up this list as he is a great playmaker and things have a tendency to happen when he touches the ball. He recorded eight goals and nine assists last year playing one of the state’s toughest schedules.

9. ANDREW HOLLEY, Grand Blanc sr. D: The next in line on a long list of standouts to come through Grand Blanc’s program, Holley is one of the state’s best defensemen. The center back is a two-time All-State choice and made the Division 1 Second Team after leading the Bobcats to the Saginaw Valley League South and district titles.

10. TONY GALLEGOS, Traverse City West sr. F: An ODP Midwest Region II player and Division I college prospect, Gallegos had a fine year last fall for the Titans, helping them make a run to the Division 1 state runner-up trophy. He was named All-State Second Team and is one of several players at West enjoying fine seasons once again. He is known for scoring clutch goals and had a pair of game-winners in the postseason last year. He finished with 11 goals and 11 assists in a balanced offense.

11. MICO RUBIO, Berkley sr. F: The other half of Berkley’s dynamo duo along with Schleicher, Rubio is a lethal finisher around the net. Named to the D-1 All-State Second Team last season, Rubio has picked up interest from D-II, D-III and NAIA schools so far.

12. CLAY MOSKOVIC, Novi Detroit Catholic Central sr. M/F: Dynamic with the ball, the left-footed Moskovic is the top player on a deep Shamrocks squad. He is extremely quick and is not bashful to pull the trigger. Moskovic earned D-1 All-State Third Team accolades coming out of a loaded district and regional last season. Moskovic plays club ball for the Michigan Wolves ECNL side.

13. ANTHONY WALLER, Warren Cousino sr. M: Opposing coaches have been raving about Waller, who has helped put his school on the radar as a respectable program during his tenure. Cousino has won two league titles and even climbed up to the MAC-White last season. Waller demands the ball at his feet. He was D-1 All-State Third Team as a junior and ranks amongst the best players in school history.

14. COLE KARMANOS, Birmingham Seaholm sr. F: Karmanos’ presence was felt last year, as he was the leading goal scorer for a team that captured the OAA White Division during the last week of the regular season. He is fast and explosive and can pull the trigger from distance. He was D-1 All-State Third Team.

15. JACK VOIGHT, South Lyon sr. F/M: A fourth-year standout, Voight broke through in the summer of 2019 and earned National League Conference Best IX for the Michigan Jaguars. He carried that into the high school season, leading South Lyon to the LVC championship and berth in the district finals. He was D-1 All-State last season and is now one of the state’s premier finishers.

16. HAYDEN NEWTON, Dexter sr. F: A goal-scoring machine for the Dreadnaughts ever since he stepped onto the varsity pitch as a freshman, Newton is again wreaking havoc on opposing defenses. He was named D-2 All-State Third Team as a sophomore and D-1 All-State Honorable Mention as a junior. He plays for the Michigan Wolves ECNL club team and at the high school level is simply a pure goal scorer. He can shoot and play crafty with both feet and has great vision on and off the ball.

17. LANDON HUNGERFORD, DeWitt sr. F/M: Ever since he entered DeWitt as a freshman, Hungerford has been one of the top players in the state in his age group. He was All-State First Team last autumn after earning third-team as a sophomore. He is exploring D-I, D-II and NAIA options right now, but his recruiting process is wide open. Hungerford is a great finisher, having racked up 19 goals and seven assists last season and is on pace to surpass that total this season even with the shortened campaign.

18. ETHAN WELCHNER, New Baltimore Anchor Bay sr. F/M: A former Vardar Academy player, Welchner has helped Anchor Bay enjoy tremendous success both last year as a team that only lost once and this year as one of the state’s top teams. The MAC White Division MVP earned D-1 All-State Honorable Mention accolades last year and is a D-I college recruit.

19. FOUAD NOMAN, Melvindale sr. F/M: Noman earned All-State First Team last season after leading his team with 23 goals and to the Division 2 state runner-up slot. Noman is a relentless worker who deploys great speed and always draws the mark of the other team’s best defender.

20. JAXTON CARPENTER, Muskegon Reeths-Puffer sr. F/M: Perhaps the top player in the Muskegon area, Carpenter scores goals and scores them consistently. He erupted for 23 goals and 12 assists in leading his team to a D-2 district championship last year and earned All-State Second Team status.

21. NICK CASSIDAY, Grand Rapids Christian jr. M: As a sophomore, Cassidy broke through and had a fine season as a central midfielder for GRC and for the west United Royal ECNL squad. He earned D-2 All-State Second Team honors as a relentless worker. He has the ability to control the tempo of the game and can both score and set up others. A ODP Region II player, Cassidy is now in the national pool for non-Academy players in the U-17 age group.

22. ABRAHAM ARELLANO, Holland jr. F: Ever since he was a freshman, Arellano has taunted opposing defenses in western Michigan. He is a pure goal-scorer for a team that laced 35 goals in its first seven games. Named D-2 All-State Second Team last season after collecting 22 goals and nine assists, expect much higher accolades this season and next year.

23. JEFF HERREMA, Grand Rapids South Christian sr. M: A year ago Herrema helped the Sailors sail to the D-3 state runner-up slot. The playmaker helps control the tempo of the game and was named All-State First Team. He is also a member of the Midwest United-Royal club team and is an ODP Midwest Region II player in the offseason as well.

24. ANTHONY DERUVO, Salem jr. D/F: Perhaps the most talented players on one of the most talented D-1 teams, Deruvo can play anywhere on the field but has been pushed up into the attack to start this season. The dynamic player blasted home six goals in the first four games and has forced opposing coaches to change their gameplays to account for Deruvo’s offensive prowess.

25. NOLAN CHAPUT, Salem sr. D/M/F: Good enough to play any field position, Chaput is as tough as nails and is good enough to spend time in the midfield or on the back line. Collecting eight goals and five assists, Chaput aided Salem’s run to the D-1 state semifinals last year and to a fast 4-0-0 start this year. The former Michigan Wolves Academy player was All-State Honorable Mention last season. He now plays for the Wolves ECNL side during club season.

26. ALEXANDER DIAC, Walled Lake Central sr. M: Diac tore his ACL just before his junior season after starring for the Michigan Jaguars club team. Now healthy, he has D-I interest coming from several schools, including Oakland University. He is the consummate set-up player, always creating for others.

27. CAMDEN SCHUCHASKIE, Grand Ledge sr. F: This talented striker has scored over 40 goals the past two seasons and has become a marked man on the pitch. Even Butler, Valparaiso, Georgetown and Oakland have taken notice in one of the best players in the Lansing area. The Midwest United star was name D-1 All-State Honorable Mention last season.

28. PRESTON BALL, Elk Rapids sr. F/M: Ball is a fourth-year starter and a two-time All-State player for the D-3 Elks. He booted home 30 goals with 15 assists last season and is gaining attention of college scouts. Ball was Traverse City Record Eagle Player of the Year last season and All-State First Team, leading the Elks to the regional finals. His team is one of the favorites in D-3 this season.

29. KADIN PATTERSON, Elk Rapids sr. D: As explosive as Elk Rapids’ offense has been in recent years, the Elks’ defense has been stifling largely due in part to the play of this stalwart at center back. He is one of the state’s best defenders, earning All-State First Team honors last year and helped lead his team to 15 clean sheets last season.

30. ANDREW HUTCHINS, Fenton sr. M: Fenton made a run to the Division 2 Final Four last season and Hutchins was one of the key cogs in that road trip. He was named All-State Second Team.

31. RYAN TANG, Birmingham Detroit Country Day sr. M: A key member of a squad that won a D-2 state title in 2018 and reached the regional finals in 2019, Tang is a great distributor of the ball. He was named D-2 All-State Second Team last season.

32. VICTOR TOUNE, DeWitt sr. M: Another talented playmaker, Toune earned D-2 All-State Second Team honors last season. He is being courted by D-I, D-II and NAIA schools.

33. JACOB SCOULER, St. Joseph jr. F: Named D-2 All-State Second Team last season after scoring 21 goals for a team that was ranked virtually the whole season. He has started the same way he left off last season, scoring goals against quality teams. The Kalamazoo Kingdom standout is also an OPD Region II player and is now being courted by colleges.

34. MIKEY TIBBITS, Stevenseville Lakeshore sr. F/M: This offensive threat was D-2 All-State Honorable Mention as a freshman and sophomore and All-State Third Team last year. He is set for much higher honors this time around. Tibbits was second on the team in scoring as a freshman and led Lakeshore in scoring the past two years. The Kalamazoo Kingdom standout is being sought after by colleges of different sizes.

35. AJ BOUCHER, Richland-Gull Lake jr. M: One of the state’s top juniors, this central midfielder is crafty with the ball and is constantly creating for everyone around him. A Kalamazoo Kingdom product, Boucher is already being courted by D-I college programs.

36. NOLAN HUNTER, East Grand Rapids sr. M: The engine that makes the Pioneers go, Hunter is known to be a fine passer. He has exceptional field vision and technical abilities and is always finding the right man with pinpoint precision. He is being courted by several colleges of different levels. Last season he battled injuries and earned only D-2 All-State Honorable Mention.

37. CARTER SCHEEL, Kalamazoo Loy-Norrix sr. M: This four-year standout is being recruited by D-I schools Southern Illinois-Edwardsburg and Bowling Green, plus several D-II, D-III and NAIA schools. He has led his team in scoring each season, is the school’s all-time assist leader and second in career goals.

38. ZACHARY TOWNSEND, Oxford sr. M While the Wildcats have one of the state’s best keepers, they also boast one of the top field players. This fourth-year starter has committed to D-I Oakland University. He is exceptionally fast and great in the air. Townsend was D-1 All-State Honorable Mention last season.

39. JAIR REAL, Wyoming sr. M/F: After earning D-1 All-State Third Team honors as a sophomore, Real and his teammates moved down to D-2 last season. He helped his team to a Top 15 ranking for the first time but was only named All-State Honorable Mention. Real is perhaps the school’s best all-time player and should be a steal for college coaches.

40. COLIN BLACKPORT, Traverse City West jr. M: Black-port had a breakout year last fall, especially in the tournament when he aided the Titans’ march to the D-1 title game. Now, Michigan State, Oakland and Calvin College are on his list of pursueors. A dynamic playmaker who works at a relentless pace, Blackport 11 goals and 11 assists last season but several of his goals were game winners.

41. CHRISTIAN MENDOZA-HUYNH, Fennville sr. F/M: Absolutely dangerous anywhere on the field, he finished with 30 goals and 19 assists and recorded at least a point in every game except a district finals loss to Holland Christian. Mendoza-Huynh was the Southwestern Athletic Conference MVP and named D-3 All-State Second Team each of the past two years. He has garnered the reputation as being one of the state’s top marksmen and should be much higher on the postseason lists this season.

42. AVERY MORGAN, Burton Genesee Christian sr. M:  Morgan is one of just three current seniors who is on course to be a rare four-time All-State athlete. Morgan was honorable mention as a freshman and first team as both a sophomore and junior. He is arguably the top D-4 players in the state and sports a Nationals Union jersey in the club season.

43. ZACHARY KUBISIAK, Ann Arbor Skyline sr. M/D: One of the holdovers from Skyline’s D-1 state championship team two years ago, the versatile Kubisak can play in the back or in the midfield. He is one of 17 seniors on the Eagles’ roster this fall and a steal for college coaches because of his work ethic and versatility.

44. DANNY JAKUBOWSKI, Livonia Churchill jr. D/M: Coming out of arguably the best soccer league in the state, the KLAA, Jakubowski was named to the All-KLAA First Team as both a freshman and sophomore, which is a rarity. Now one of the mega conference’s top players, Jakubowski will not be a state-wide secret any longer.

45. STEWART SMITH, Grosse Pointe Woods University-Liggett sr. M/F: The engine that makes the Knights go, Smith was instrumental in helping Liggett reach the state finals for the seventh time and finishing as the state runner-up. He was named D-4 All-State First Team and is one of the top small-school talents in the state.

46. MIKLKOS BOSH TANYI, Grosse Ile sr. M: Tanyi played behind six All-State Red Devils that graduated from the Division 3 state championship team. He earned All-State Honorable Mention last year but is one of the top D-3 players this season. He scorched the nets with 27 goals and was credited with 16 assists last year. This year he is the leader of this band.

47. TOMMY ALLOS, Sterling Heights Stevenson sr. F: The former Vardar Academy player is at his second year at Stevenson. The dynamic pure goal scorer is on an offensive tear this season and knows how to get in the right position to score or create chances. He is being courted by Division I schools Oakland and Detroit Mercy.

48. ANTONIO CALABRESE East Kentwood jr. M: The next in line of great East Kentwood players, Calabrese has all the tools to shine over the next couple of years.

49. JAEGER DeBOER, Hudsonville sr. D: Rock solid in the back, DeBoer is set for a bright future on the pitch. He is one of the state’s better backs and should be higher on the postseason lists this year.

50. SETH BEDFORD, Brighton sr. F: Although he only had six goals and five assists last season, Bedford is worth more than stats at Brighton. He’s extremely fast, has great vision and and can uncork a shot from anywhere for one of Division 1 state title contenders.

TOP GOALKEEPERS

1. ZAC KELLY, Holt sr.: Considered one of the best goalkeepers to come through Michigan in several years, Kelly’s senior season was saved in early September when Holt schools reinstated fall sports. He was Division 1 All-State First Team last season. Also a Midwest Region II ODP keeper, Kelly has incredible range and makes the saves most high school-aged keepers cannot. He helped Holt reach the regional finals two years ago and to a top-15 ranking last season. He has committed to Michigan State.

2. EVAN DEJONG, Utica Eisenhower sr.: Named All-State Third Team as a junior, DeJong is just a really steady presence in net and rarely makes mistakes. He is also at his best on restarts and penalty kicks, having the knack of coming up with big saves on this situations.

3. ELIJAH BURLACK, West Bloomfield sr.: At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, Burlack is an imposing figure between the pipes and is quite mobile with his body size being more like a football player. An D-1 All-State Honorable Mention pick last year, Burlack is at his best on restarts and penalty kicks. He saved seven PKs last season, so teams do not want to get into a shootout against West Bloomfield this season.

4. TRISTAN BENNETT, Oxford sr.: Coaches have been raving about Bennett since he was a freshman and the three-time all-district and three-time All-OAA selection is a top-tier keeper. He keeps his team in virtually every game with his long arms and incredible range. Bennett records saves in the ‘how did he save that?’ highlight reel category. The Vardar product will be a steal for college programs.

5. CARSON FOOR, Mattawan sr.: This two-sport standout plays center or power forward on the basketball court. On the soccer pitch, the 6-foot-3 Foor is sterling between the pipes. He plays club ball for the talented Kalamazoo Kingdom U-18 side and in the high school circuit he is as steady as they come. Foor was All-State Third Team last year in D-2 but should be one of the top keepers in D-1 this year when all is said and done as Mattawan moved up.
