GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Notre Dame Prep gets the best of state-ranked Bronson, Marshall in quad sweep

Pontiac Notre Dame finished off a competitive week of seven matches in five days, topping three other quality teams in a quad Saturday at home.

The Fighting Irish defeated Division 3 statute-ranked Bronson, Division 2 Marshall and Essexville-Garber, honorable mention in D-2 to move to 20-3 on the season.

It took NDP four sets to down Bronson, winners of state titles from 2016-2018, posting a 25-21, 25-27, 25-22, 25-21 victory.

Sara Nouhan and Grace Wenaas each with 11 kills while Abby Nellis added seven kills in the match. Livy Kowalkowski continued her dominance on the defensive end with 34 digs and 25 service receptions and nine service points including a pair of aces. On the week Kowalkowski had 160 digs and 171 service receptions.

Josie Bloom and Kendall Smith each dished out 19 assists while Bloom was solid in the one corner with 13 digs. Aly Berent had another strong match with 12 digs, 13 serve receptions, seven kills and six service points.

The second match of the day had the Irish take on the Dukes from Garber in the school’s first-ever meeting.  Notre Dame came out on top with a 25-19, 25-23 and 25-17 sweep.

Nouhan again provided the offensive spark with eight kills to go with six digs and Nellis kicked in six kills of her own.  Bloom again had 19 assists, nine digs and three kills.  Berent was solid again with 14 digs, five kills and seven service points, while Hanna Rutilla had seven digs, three kills, nine service points including four aces. Elyssa Wallace contributed 19 digs to the cause to go with her  24 serve receptions.

The final match had the Irish up against the powerful offense of the Redhawks from Marshall. The Irish defense led by Kowalkowski’s 34 digs, 25 serve receptions, 12 points including four aces was up to the task on route to a 25-12, 25-15, 26-24 triumph.

Bloom played another strong game as she added 20 more assists on the day and nine service points with two aces.  On the finishing side of those assist was Nouhan who added 17 kills to her day’s work, her best in an Irish uniform. Hanna Rutilla added seven digs, nine receptions, three kills and 14 points, including two aces to her day’s work.
