BOYS SOCCER: Brandon avenges Goodrich; St. Mary’s upends Pontiac in shootout
LINDEN — Ortonville Brandon gained some measure of revenge Monday on one of the four teams that defeated the Blackhawks in the regular season.
After losing to Flint Metro League ti-champion Goodrich 4-1 back on Sept. 16, Brandon turned the tables and blanked rival Goodrich 3-0 in a Division 2 district semifinals match at Linden.
The Blackhawks will face Orchard Lake St. Mary’s at 7 p.m. Wednesday for the district championship.
Ian Burke scored his 19th goal of the season and assisted on another to pace Brandon. Evan Sweeder and Geo Bertholee also scored for the Blackhawks.
Ben Grycza picked up his 11th shutout of the season on 10 saves for the Blackhawks (13-4-0). Kaden Holloway shut down Goodrich’s top offensive threat, sophomore Caeden Rossell, who scored three goals against Brandon one month ago.
ORCHARD LAKE ST. MARY’S 2, PONTIAC 1 (2OT, SO): St. Mary’s went the distance to defeat Pontiac Monday in a Division 2 district semifinals at Linden and advanced to the district finals for the first time in school history.
The Eaglets (6-5-0) held a 5-4 edge in the shootout after the two teams were tied 1-1 after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
Pontiac finished the season 9-5-0.
