Sometimes years of greatness are very hard to reproduce.

The girls track and field season of 2010 in the area was hard to match in 2011. After all, a team state champion and five individual state champions last season was a rarity and several of those athletes departed last summer are currently running at the collegiate level.

The season of 2011 still brought forth several memorable performances and produced yet another All-American from this tradition-rich region, plus several dozen state qualifiers and state placers. There were also two athletes that posted top-three finishes at the various state meets, although no state champions this season.

On the www.northoaklandsports.com 2011 All-Area Girls Track & Field Team, there were several high-caliber athletes who couldn’t crack the first team and list of honorable mentions was quite extensive with some fine young talent coming up through the ranks.

The squad was selected based on overall performances at the state, county, regional and league meets, plus other large invitationals. Athletes were allowed just one spot on the first team, excluding relays, and were removed from open events elsewhere on the list to spread the talent around. Non-first team athletes could be placed on the second team and honorable mention in multiple events.

The team was selected by NOS staff in conjunction with area coaches.

Below are profiles of all of the first team honorees:

SHOT PUT: KELLY MORGAN, Troy: Morgan came over to Michigan from Maryland to play for a high-level travel hockey program and turned out to be a valuable asset on the Colts’ track team as one of the area’s top throwers. In fact, she ranked among the top two in the area in both the shot put and discus. In the shot put, she had a best of 35-0 and was second at the Sterling Heights Invitational, third at the Warren Mott regional, fourth at the OAA Red Division league meet and ninth at the Oakland County Championships. In the discus, her best was 112-0 and she placed second at the Sterling Heights Invite, fifth at the league meet and sixth at both the regional and county meet.

“Kelly was a great surprise. She came up here from South Carolina to play hockey and ended up being our top all-around thrower,” said coach Matt Richardson. “She left to go back to Columbia right after school ended, so we were fortunate enough to have her. She scored us a lot of points in the throws this year.”

DISCUS: LINNEA BERRIMAN, Lake Orion: A starter on the Dragons’ volleyball team that reached the Class A regional finals last November, Berriman took her talents to the discus ring and excelled the past two years as a state qualifier. This season she saved her best for last, finishing fourth at the Division 1 state finals with a career-best 123-9. Consistent the whole season, she was the Ortonville Brandon regional champion, finished second at the OAA Red Division league meet and fourth at the county.

HIGH JUMP: ANNA MANILLA, Clarkston: A starting forward on the Wolves’ basketball team that had a grand turnaround this past winter and reached the Class A regional finals, Manilla, a junior, emerged as the area’s top high jumper this season. A three-year varsity veteran, Manilla’s best effort came at the Division 1 state meet, where she leapt 5-5 to finish fourth. She was also second at the Ortonville Brandon regional, third at the OAA Red Division league meet and tied for 11th at the county meet. In the long jump, she fourth at the regional and fifth at the league meet and had a best of 15-10. Manilla also ran the 1,600 relay for Clarkston, as her unit was fifth at the league and 12th at the county meet.

“She never got beat during dual meets and jumped steadily at five feet during the month of may. When we got to June she kept getting higher and higher and jumped 5-5 at the state meet,” said coach John Yorke. “She’s great competitor, really shined at big competitions. She never went below five foot all season. We’re looking at having her back next season.”

LONG JUMP: JESSICA HOWELL, Rochester Adams: A transfer from Oxford to Adams, this sophomore continued to make strides as a multi-event athlete. In her top event, the long jump, Howell was the OAA Red Division league champion at 17-11, won the Ortonville Brandon regional, finished second at the county and sixth at the Division 1 state meet. In the 100 meters, she was the league runner-up, placed third at the regional (12.2), fourth at the Algonac Relays and seventh at the county meet. In the 200, Howell was Oxford Invitational champ, placed second at the regional (25.3) and league, eighth at the county and 13th (25.77 FAT) at the state finals. Additionally, Howell ran on the Highlanders’ 1,600 relay that won the Algonac Relays, was second at the regional (4:06.7), fourth at the league, 13th at the county and 28th at the state meet.

“Jessica is a great competitor. She did four events at every meet and would do more if you were allowed to,” said coach Eric Lohr. “She’s one of those kids that just hates losing. She’s a strong, fast kid that can run a lot of events. She’ll probably be more like a heptathlete in college. I’m looking forward to seeing what she can do the next two years of high school. She has the athleticism to be a great long jumper.”

POLE VAULT: SARAH HILLEBRAND, Oxford: This junior was head and shoulders the top vaulter in the area. The junior won the Davison Invitational and county meet, finished second at the Sterling Heights Invitational and Ortonville Brandon regional (10-5) and tied for 11th at the Division 1 state finals. She is the school record holder in the event.

100 HURDLES: ALEXANDRIA JOHNSON, Lake Orion: Headed for Ohio State, Johnson was one of the leading point-scorers in the area this season running multiple events for the Dragons. In the 100 hurdles, she missed a Division 1 state title by one one-hundredths of a second, running 14.14 behind Falicia Sims of Farmington Harrison. Johnson was also second at both the county and Midwest Meet of Champions and won both the Ortonville Brandon regional and OAA Red Division league meet titles. In the 200, she was a regional champ, placed third at the county, fourth at the state finals (25.12 FAT) and sixth at the Midwest meet. Johnson, who was league champ in the 400 (58.0), also anchored the Dragons’ 1,600 relay that placed third at the regional, fourth at the county (4:06.3) and sixth at the league meet.

300 HURDLES: ANNA HARITOS, Auburn Hills Avondale: After qualifying for the state finals last fall in cross-country, this freshman made quite a debut in track and field as a hurdler and middle distance runner. Her best event turned out to be the 300 hurdles, where she was the only local competitor to medal at the state finals, earning eighth at the Division 2 meet (47.48 FAT). She was also the OAA Gold Division league champion (47.3), placed second at the Bloomfield Hills Lahser regional and fifth at the county championships. She was third at the league meet in the 100 hurdles (15.5) and fourth at the regional, while she ran a leg on a state qualifying 3,200 relay that ran 10:14 this season and placed 22nd at the state finals. She also competed on the Yellowjackets’ 1,600 relay that was a league champion and finished third at the regional (4:17.7).

100 METERS: TEANNA MURRAY, Rochester: An explosive sprinter, Murray had quite an interesting career, which included the past two seasons at Rochester after running at Pontiac Northern her freshman season and not running at all her sophomore year. She placed in a wide variety of events this season and in the 100 meters she was OAA Red Division league champ (12.0 hand-timed), won the Algonac Relays and placed fourth at the county. She was disqualified at the regional. In the 200, she was the league champion (25.1 hand-timed) and placed fifth at the county. As anchor of the 800 relay, she helped her quartet win the league, place third at the regional (1:44.39), fourth at the Algonac Relays and 15th at the state finals, while she was also the anchor of Rochester’s first-team all-area 400 relay unit.

“She was our top sprinter this season and a great relay person,” said coach Larry Adams. “She’s a great anchor leg. When she got the baton, I knew if it was close, she would give us a chance. She tied our school record in the 100 and has the 200 record, ran on both sprint relays and even ran on our mile relay a couple of times. She was a big part of our success the past couple of years.”

200 METERS: JASMINE JONES, Auburn Hills Avondale: Another senior sprinter who put together an impressive resume, Jones ran in two events at the Midwest Meet of Champions, earning fifth in the 200 (24.83 FAT) and competed on Michigan’s runner-up 800 relay (1:41.55). In the 100, she was the OAA Gold Division champion (12.1 hand-timed), finished second at the Bloomfield Hills Lahser regional and was third at the Division 2 state meet (12.2 FAT). In the 200, she won the league meet, was second at the regional and county and third at the state finals. As anchor of Avondale’s 400 relay, she helped her unit finish third at the league, fourth at the regional (51.0), fifth at the county and 26th at the state. She was also on the Yellowjackets’ 1,600 relay that were league champs and finished third at the regional.

400 METERS: ASHLEY DAUPHINE, Troy: Part of a deep group of seniors on Troy’s regional and league co-championship team, Dauphine ran wide variety of events but the open 400 was her best. She was second at the Sterling Heights Invitational and Warren Mott regional, third at the OAA Red Division league meet (58.8), fourth at the Shumake Relays, eighth at the county and 21st at the statefinals. She was also third at the Sterling Heights Invite and sixth at the league in the 200 (26.8), while also running on the Colts’ 1,600 relay that won a regional (4:06.1), finished second at the Sterling Heights Invite, third at the league, fourth at Shumake, fifth at the county and 24th at the state finals.

“She’s very consistent. We knew she would good us a good performance,”  said Richardson. “She ran well at a lot of meets for us.”

800 METERS: JAMIE MORRISSEY, Rochester Adams: A sophomore, Morrissey fought through a hip injury at the end of the season to still finish with all-state honors in the 800 for the second straight campaign. She finished sixth at the Division 1 state finals in 2:15.0 to lower her school record. She was also the Oxford Invitational and Ortonville Brandon regional champ, placed second at the OAA Red Division and third at the county. She also ran on the Highlanders’ distance relays. As anchor of the 3,200 relay, she helped Adams finish as league champion (9:35.6), place second at both the county and regional (9:35.9), third at the Oxford Invitational and 20th at the state finals. Her 1,600 relay finished second at the regional (4:06.7), fourth at the league meet, 13th at the county and 28th at state.

“Jamie has very good leg speed, so she has a very strong kick, which helps her in a close race. She can run a lot of races, too,” said Lohr. “She runs the quarter in 60 seconds she helped our two-mile relay go 9:35 and our mile relay go (4:06). We didn’t have to use her in the mile this year, but she’s very capable of doing well in that race.”

1,600 METERS: BROOK HANDLER, Rochester: After winning the Miss Cross-Country award last fall and winning the state championship in that sport, Handler did nothing but impress in her final prep track season. It all ended at the USTF Junior Nationals in Eugene, Oregon, where she finished third in the college-style 1,500 meters (4:24.44) to earn All-America honors. During the season, she was exceptional in a multitude of events. For starters, the University-of-Michigan prospect was ranked nationally in the 1,600 meters, winning the OAA Red Division, West Bloomfield regional and Midwest Meet of Champions while finishing second at the West Bloomfield Invitational and third in the Division 1 state finals in 4:49.7. In the 800, she won league and regional titles, set the county-meet record (2:11.5), placed second at the state and was second at the Midwest Meet with a school-record time of 2:09.86, which like the 1,600, rank in the top 10 in state history. She was also second at the league in the 400 (58.3), ran 11:12 in the 3,200 and also spent time on the Falcons’ 1,600 and 3,200 relays this season. Last season, she anchored the state record-setting 3,200 relay.

“Brook is a great competitor, good listener, her work ethic is fantastic and she’s a great student-athlete,” said Adams. “When it was time to race, she was always very focused. She’s a big part of our program the past four seasons and we’ll miss her.”

3,200 METERS: GABRIELLE THIVIERGE, Rochester Adams: A swimmer in the off-season, this sophomore emerged as one of the state’s top distance runners. In her top event, the 3,200, Thivierge was second at the Oxford Invitational, OAA Red Division league, Ortonville Brandon regional and county (10:44.2) and third despite blistering heat conditions at the D-1 state finals (10:51.05 FAT). Over in the 1,600, she was second at the regional and third at the league meet, while she ran a leg on the Highlanders’ 3,200 relay that placed at various meets and was 20th at state.

“Because she is a swimmer and distance runner, she has amazing endurance,” said Lohr. “She likes to go all out and is a great competitor. Even at the state meet in the extreme conditions, she battled and hung in there for third. From the 800 on up, she does a great job for us. She broke five minutes in the mile and runs a 2:20 split on the (3,200) relay. We’re looking forward to seeing what she can do in the future.”

AT-LARGE: BERRION BERRY, Rochester Stoney Creek: A junior in her third varsity season, Berry set new school records in three events and ran in the state meet in those same three races. In the 100 meters, she was second at both the OAA White Division league meet and Ortonville Brandon regional (12.1 hand-timed), third at the Algonac Relays, fifth at the county and ninth at the Division 1 state meet (12.37 FAT). In the 200, she was third at the OAA White Division league and Ortonville Brandon regional (25.5 hand-timed), seventh at the county and 15th at state (26.1 FAT). She also anchored the 800 relay that also made the first team all-area list.

“She’s come on strong the last two years,” said coach Paul Duffy. “She was the anchor of our (800) relay and reached the semifinals in both the 100 and 200 at the state meet. We’re hoping she can come back even stronger next season.”

400-METER RELAY: EMILY LEPPEK-MONJOA LIKINE-TEQUAZHA TERRY-TEANNA MURRAY, Rochester: After winning the event at the D-1 finals last season, the Falcons placed eighth at state this year with two new legs that did not even run track a year ago. Made up of sophomore newcomers Terry and Likine, plus Leppek, a junior, and Murray, the lone senior, this foursome’s best was 49.32 (FAT) and they also won the OAA Red Division, West Bloomfield regional and Algonac Relays titles. They did not run at the 400 relay county meet. The same group also comprised the Falcons’ 800 relay that was league champions and 15th at state.

“We had to replace two of our legs, so it was surprising because we were still able to place at state,” said Adams. “We only have one senior in this relay with some good young sprinters coming up, so we could be good in this again next year.”

800-METER RELAY: ASHLEY HALM-STEPHANIE COSENTINO-COLLEEN BRUMMITT-BERRION BERRY, Rochester Stoney Creek: This group of two seniors (Halm and Cosentino) and two juniors Brummitt and Berry) put it all together in the final month of the season, shattering the school record with a 1:44.1 clocking at the Ortonville Brandon regional, which they won convincingly. They were also fourth at the OAA White Division league meet, sixth at both the North Farmington Relays and county meet and 17th at the Division 1 state finals.

“As a group they put it all together at the regional meet,” said Duffy. “I think once we figured out the right order and got our handoffs down, we ran in the 1:44-1:45 range the past few weeks of the season.”

1,600-METER RELAY: EMILY LEPPEK-MAIRI VAN DYKE-CADY POZOLO-BROOK HANDLER, Rochester: After graduating two of the four legs from this relay that placed eighth at state last year, the Falcons still wound up 13th this season, posting a 4:01.6 time at the finals. They also won the event at the West Bloomfield Invitational, placed second at both the OAA Red Division league meet and West Bloomfield regional and ran sixth at the county. Handler and Pozolo are seniors, Leppek a junior and Van Dyke a freshman. Leppek and Handler ran on the relay last season.

“We lost two good legs but we had some other girls step up and replace them and we still almost broke four minutes,” said Adams.”We had our best race at the state meet. We were competitive in this race the whole season.”

3,200-METER RELAY: KATIE SHAHEEN-THERESA HENCSIE-JULIA DINVERNO-LINDSEYMILLER, Troy: After graduating three of four legs from last year’s 3,200 relay that finished third at state and ran 9:15, the Colts returned only Miller to that foursome and still managed to reload for another top-10 state finish. With three seniors and one junior (Shaheen), the still managed to win the slow heat at the Division 1 state finals by a sizeable margin and still finished ninth overall, only two seconds off a top-eight medal. They clocked 9:29.73 in a race that included a dropped baton and no team running even close to them for the final two legs. They were also the county and Warren Mott regional champs, finished second at both the Shumake Relays and Sterling Heights Invitational and third at the OAA Red Division league meet.

“The past few years, we have been blessed with a lot of very good half-milers,” said Richardson. “We lost three legs from last year and we’ll lose three of this year’s group.  They ran well the last three weeks of the season. They won the regional by some 25 seconds, won the county by a good distance and won the slow heat at the state meet. I think if we could have been in the fast heat, there’s no doubt we would have placed. We ran 9:29 with no one running with us the second half of the race.”

COACH OF THE YEAR: MATT RICHARDSON, Troy: Troy’s program dipped slightly in the early 2000s, but Richardson came aboard seven years ago and has built the Colts’ track and cross country programs into one of the best in Oakland County.

This season the Colts finished 6-0-0 in duals, extending their unbeaten streak to more than three seasons, and shared the overall OAA Red Division crown with Rochester. Troy won the Shumake Relays (138.5 points) and Warren Mott regional (156.5), its third straight regional title, finished second at the Sterling Heights Invitational (110) and league meet (95) and placed ninth at the county meet. The Colts did not score at the state finals despite competing despite having qualifiers in 10 events.

“This year we just seemed to have great depth,” said Richardson. “We didn’t have a team that was going to score a lot at the state meet, but we could score at invitationals in just about every event. We even had a pole vaulter for the first time. I felt that, even though we lost some really good kids, that we had a good senior class and some talented young girls coming up. We were able to keep our streak alive by not losing a dual meet in over three years.”
