ORTONVILLE — During its state championship run last season, Lake Orion’s boys track and field team lost just one meet and that came at the Division 1 Ortonville Brandon regional.

The Dragons remedied that situation Friday afternoon.

Lake Orion captured its fourth regional championship in school history despite the absence of its top two sprinters, and rolled up an impressive 104.5 points to topple the 15-school field.

Grand Blanc, which defeated Lake Orion at last year’s regional and finished second at the state meet, was second with 93 points.

“As I said all season long, it has been our depth that has made the difference,” admitted Lake Orion boys coach Stan Ford. “We have the ability to slide some other kids around in the sprints and have stepped up. Plus this regional is tougher than it was a couple of years ago, a lot more balance. We still were able to score a lot of points in a lot of events.”

Rochester Adams’ girls team, unbeaten on the year, scored points in bunches. In fact, the Highlanders won nine events with four runner-up finishes spread over 17 events. Clarkston, the meet runner-up, was a distance second with 70 points.

“We have so much talent on this team,” offered senior Jessica Howell, who won three events and finished second in another. “We have something to prove. We can score a lot of points in a lot of events. We’re looking forward to the state meet.”

The top two finishers in each event, plus others that reached the predetermined standard, advance to the Lower Peninsula Division 1 state finals June 1 at East Kentwood High School.

Howell won the long jump (17-11.25) and 100 (12.18), finished second in the 200 and ran a leg on the winning 1,600-meter relay. That unit included Sophie Smith, Amber Jamison and Jamie Morrissey and together they clocked a track and school record 3:58.12.

Morrissey also won the 1,600 (4:59.41), 800 (2:16.85) and anchored the winning 3,200 relay (9:25.64). Lydia Stanley, Caroline Kletzien and Gabrielle Thivierge were also on the 3,200 relay quartet, while Thivierge pulled away down the stretch to win the 3,200 (11:03.73) ahead of Rochester’s Jessica Goethals (11:05.31).

Smith was also in on the Highlanders’ hit parade by capturing the 200 (24.72) and 400 (56.24) for Adams.

“I think this rivaled our performance at the league meet in terms of us dominating,” said Adams coach Eric Lohr, whose squad repeated as regional champions. “This was actually better than the league meet in terms of times. We are peaking at the right time. We set a couple of school records and had a couple of surprises in there, too, which helped us.”

Clarkston’ runner-up meet finish included three victories and three school records, two coming in events that Wolves did not win.

“We had our best day. We broke three school records that dated back in 1987,” said Clarkston coach John Yorke. “I am very pleased with our efforts.”

Megan Nicholson won the high jump (5-4), Taylor Mullins edged out three other qualifiers in the 300 hurdles (46.05) and the foursome of Alyssa Bey, Kyla Russell, Mullins and Madison Wilson clocked 1:45.06 to win the 800 relay.

Romeo’s Sloane Brunner won both the discus (119-9) and shot put (35-0), Port Huron Northern’s Monica Fusee had the best effort in the pole vault (11-3), Rochester Stoney Creek’s Laura Johnston won the 100 hurdles (15.31) and Brandon’s 400 relay of Cyona Rush, Jayna Dent, Ashley Roussey and Kierra Johnson clocked 49.67 to round out the winners in the girls meet.

Brandon finished third in the girls team standings with 61.5 points, while Fenton (57) and Rochester (49) rounded out the top five.

Lake Orion’s foursome of Kirk Hansen, David Arenz, David Diaz and TJ Carey posted one of the state’s best times in winning the 3,200 relay (7:49.19), a school and track record. Jordan Waymar broke the tape in the 110 hurdles (14.4) and 300 hurdles (38.25), while the Dragons’ other win came from the 400 relay quartet of Waymer, Matthew Krause, Alan Karrip and Chris Leigh, which finished in a swift 42.8.

Auburn Hills Avondale, which bumped up to Division 1 enrollment-wise after winning the D-2 state crown last June, finished third 61 points. Joshuwa Hollomon came back from injury to win the 100 (10.72), Zachary Purcilly had the best toss in the shot put (50-11.5), while Geoffrey Williston was a surprise winner in the 800 (1:54.6) for Avondale.

“I was surprised that I won. I knew there were some great runners in this race,” said Williston. “I know we are not in Division 2 anymore, but I think our team as a while did all right here today in D-1.”

Grand Blanc’s Grant fisher outdueled Lake Orion’s TJ Carey to win the 1,600 (4:16.31 to 4:17.13), while Fisher came back to win the 3,200 (9:16.08), just ahead of Adams’ Stephen Biebelhausen (9:18.78) in an event that saw 12 runners eclipse the qualifying mark.

Clarkston’s foursome of Ian Eriksen, Scott Cousino, Joey Definis and Blake Sutherland won the 1,600 relay (3:21.87), just ahead of Adams (3:22.41), while Eriksen blazed a 21.81 trail to singe the track in the 200.

On his last attempt, Clarkston’s Caine Watlington captured the long jump (20-6), Brandon’s Cody Haragos won the pole vault (12-10) and Grand Blanc’s Luke Maclean took the discus (158-0) crown and teammate Robin Plummer the high jump (6-3).

Port Huron’s Mark Chapman the 400 (48.68) while the Big Reds also captured the 800 relay (1:29.62).

Clarkston finished fourth in the boys team standings (53) with Adams following just behind (52.5) in the top five.

TROY — A season of misfortune finally took the right turn Thursday night for Troy’s girls soccer team.

The Colts, sacked by countless injuries this season, finally had their full lineup and that equation helped brew up a 2-0 victory over arch-rival Troy Athens in the OAA Red Division finale for both teams.

Troy scored twice in the final 17 minutes to prevail over the Red Hawks. The Colts have not lost in the regular season to Athens in four seasons.

“We have not,” smiled Troy senior goalkeeper Alison Holland, who picked up her third shutout of the season and 38th of her prep career. “I think this is what we needed. We knew we still had a good team, but we’ve had so many players hurt this year that we haven’t played with our full team until now. It feels good to have everyone back and beat Athens again.”

Holland made just one save but was active on through balls and dangerous crosses into the box. Having Holland and several field players back could be just what the doctor ordered for the colts with the state tournament less than two weeks away.

“It’s been hard because we haven’t had everybody healthy until now. We’ve had a lot of misfortune,” said Troy coach Brian Zawislak. “So we haven’t been able to see what we are capable of when every time we gain someone back, we lose another player. We’re hoping a win like this will give us confidence because we’re not in an easy district. There are a lot of good teams and we’re now just getting healthy.”

Troy (5-6-3, 3-2-2), which moved into third place in the league despite its battles of misfortune, broke the stalemate with 16:17 to play. Madison Hirsch slotted a low restart through traffic onto an onrushing Danielle Mukomel, who blasted home her shot from close range for what proved to be the game winner.

Jenna Cabelof finished off the Red Hawks when she scored from two yards out with 7:19 to play. Erin Wrubel’s initial shot caromed off the far post before Cabelhof cleaned up the loose ball.

Troy outshot Athens by an 8-7 count, including 3-1 with shots directly on frame. Both of the Colts’ two second-half shots directly on goal resulted in changes on the scoreboard.

Athens had a shot sail just wide of the post in the opening minute of the game, but the Red Hawks had a difficult time executing on both ends of the field, giving up both goals on restarts. Athens (7-5-3, 3-3-1) could not capitalize on three cornerkicks of the game.

“We didn’t execute,” sighed Athens coach Todd Heugh. “We had some chances and we could not get much on frame. And credit to Troy, because they were able to finish on two restarts. We didn’t do a good job of (marking up) on those two restarts and

FOR MORE TENNIS COVERAGE: http://northoaklandsports.com/?s=Tennis&x=13&y=4

FENTON — It was a year ago when Holly’s girls tennis team was left looking in a somewhat awkward position: Looking up.

The Bronchos lost their first league tournament title in three decades, finishing second behind Fenton in the flint Metro League standings, and ended up second to Fenton again at the Division 2 regional.

This position is something that Holly remedied this season.

Holly, which captured its 30th league title in 31 seasons last week, won its fourth regional crown in five years Thursday on the courts of Fenton and Holly high schools —in convincing fashion. The Bronchos sent representatives into the finals in seven of the eight flights and had five champions on the day.

All of Holly’s entrants reached at least the semifinals. The result was 29 points, well ahead of Fenton’s 19 points, as the top two teams advanced to the Lower Peninsula Division 2 state finals May 31-June 1 at Grand Blanc.

The win marks Holly’s 15th straight state finals berth.

“What’s more impressive is that how many players we lost (to graduation),” offered Holly coach Will Sopheia. “We lost seven players and Fenton graduated seven seniors. Fenton beat us at (both) the league tournament and regional last season, 25-23 at the regional. But we have lot of new players that have stepped in and helped us this season and we were able to have a huge point swing over last season.

“This season was a new opportunity for some youngers players that have filled in nicely. We only have three seniors on the whole team,” added Sopheia.

Flushing and Lapeer West tied for third with 14 points each, while Clio (10), Lapeer East (8), Alpena (6), Swartz Creek (6), Flint Kearsley (0) and Saginaw Arthur Hill (0) rounded out the 10-school field.

In the singles matches, Holly won the No. 2 and No 4 flights, while grabbing the runner-up slot at No. 1 singles. The only flight Holly did not produce a finalist was No. 3 singles.

Holly freshman Jenna Pepper continued to impress with the crown at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 sweep of Lapeer West’s Megan Morris. The Bronchos’ Victoria Skubik downed Lapeer East’s Mary Morrison, 6-0, 6-3, in the finals at No. 2 singles.

At No. 1 singles, Fenton’s Madison Ballard defeated Holly’s Natalie Clink, 6-0, 6-1, while Lapeer West’s Blake Clements swept Lapeer East’s Annette Williams 6-1, 6-2, in the finals at No. 3 singles.

Holly won the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 doubles flights and had the finalist at No. 2 doubles, using their depth to pull away from the rest of the pack.

Carley Postma and Sydney Renehan provided the Bronchos’ with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Fenton’s Lilly DuBois and Emily McIntosh. Holly’s No. 3 duo of Alanah Rau and Leah Moller won their flight at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2, 6-4 sweep of Flushing’s Madelyn Wendlingand Clancy Gleason.

In the No.4 doubles flight, it was Holly’s unit of Katherine Skubik and Claire Young that prevailed in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-0, over Fenton’s Sylee Kiran and Katie Kurycz.

The only doubles flight that didn’t see a Holly victory was No. 2 doubles, where the Fenton duo of Ashley Bearden-Hanna Horton prevailed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Holly’s Daryl Spurgeon and Haley Crimmins.

“I couldn’t be more prouder of this team. To be as young as we are and to have all of these new players, including several freshmen, in our lineup and to come back and win the league and regional is quite an accomplishment,” offered Sopheia. “This shows how much hard work the players on this team have put in during the past year. At the beginning of the season, we didn’t know what to expect with all of the new players. But as a group we have all stepped it up and now we’re going back to the state finals.

WATERFORD TWP. — In what could be Lake Orion’s most memorable boys golf season to date, the Dragons added another exciting chapter Wednesday.

Nine days after shooting a school record 288, state-ranked Lake Orion captured its first Oakland County Division I Tournament title at Pontiac Country Club. The Dragons put together a play-five, count-four score of 303 to win going away, as he nearest competitor was 12 strokes behind.

“This is our first county title. We have been consistently a good team the past several years, but we finally put it together at the county tournament,” offered Lake Orion coach Monty Gallaher. “There are so many good teams and players here ever year. This is a great accomplishment.”

The Dragons, who finished fourth last season and are currently ranked seventh in the state in Division 1, also produced the day’s medalist, as Oakland University-bound senior Alex Waelchli clubbed a 2-under round of 70 to continue his torrid pace. He also shot a 67 to win the NextTee Tournament at Oakland Hills last week.

<img class="size-full wp-image-16917" alt="TOP FLIGHT: Lake Orion senior Alex Waelchli and the Dragons captured their first Oakland county Division I Tournament Wednesday at Pontiac Country Club.
“I didn’t even know this was our first Oakland County championship’” admitted Waelchli. “It’s an honor to win something like this. We got off to a slow start this season, but I think we are starting to play better as a team.”

Senior Mason Gorris (74), sophomore Schuyler Werth (77) and junior Griffin Beeler (82) aided Lake Orion’s winning cause.

Division 1 top-ranked Novi Detroit Catholic Central was a distant second at 315, with Farmington (316) and Rochester Adams (316) one stroke back. Rochester Stoney Creek claimed fifth (318) in the 25-school field, while defending champion and and D-1 sixth-ranked Birmingham Brother Rice (320), Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood (320), D-1 eighth-ranked Clarkston (320), Novi (320) and Rochester (322) rounded out the top 10 team scores.

Cranbrook Kingswood’s Dylan Deogun was second at 72, while Gorris tied Adams’ Eric Busa and Rochester freshman Michael Busse for third at 74.

White Lake Lakeland’s Justin Pahl was sixth at 75, followed by Clarkston’s Brendon Graham (76), Brother Rice’s Kyle Gaines (76), Stoney Creek’s Spencer Lendzion (76), Catholic Central’s Phil Ritchie (77), Novi’s Brad Kozinski (77) and Garret Buckley (77), defending champion Gavin Garris (77) of South Lyon and Bloomfield Hills Andover’s Kyle Petrovich (77) all followed in the top 10 of the medalist standings.

Soaring past the annual loaded field is another benchmark for Lake Orion’s rising program.

“These programs (in Oakland County) are always the watermark for us. They are all great programs and we hope to be here every year competing against the very best,” added Gallagher.

As for Waelchli, he continued to play amongst the state’s elite.

“I always try to go out and [play my best and try to win every tournament,” smiled Waelchli. “I thought I played really well. I only had, I believe, only 25 putts all day.”
