LAKE ORION — Revenge can often be sweet, especially when a championship is on the line. That’s exactly what happened for Rochester Adams on Tuesday.

The Highlanders put the finishing touches on the Oakland Activities Association White Division girls basketball championship with a resounding 38-25 road victory over second place Lake Orion.

The host Dragons needed a win to stay in the hunt entering the final game of the regular season.

The win avenged a 43-42 defeat to the Dragons back on Jan. 18 and snapped a three-game losing streak overall, where Adams shot miserably from the floor last week in losses to Rochester Stoney Creek, Farmington and Bloomfield Hills Andover. Only the Farmington loss was league game.

Adams (12-7, 11-2) now has a two-game lead on the rest of the field with one game left in the regular season.

“We knew after the loss last Thursday to Farmington that this was the best way to play for a championship,” offered Adams coach Fran Scislowicz, who guided his team to its 11th league championship in 21 seasons. “We knew if they won they would tie us (for the lead) and if they won, we would take it all. We were thrilled to have that opportunity today and we capitalized on it.”

Adams did take it all behind a stellar defensive effort, which kept Lake Orion from getting untracked offensively in the comforts of its own field house.

The Highlanders led 10-5 after the first quarter but went ice cold in the second frame. Using a slow-down, patient offense, Lake Orion turned the five-point deficit at the end of the first quarter to a 16-12 lead at the half.

The Dragons went on an 11-2 run in the second quarter in, not allowing the Highlanders to convert a single basket and just 2-of-4 free throw shooting. Meanwhile, Lake Orion sank three straight 3-pointers from three different players — Laura Turnbull, Marisa Secontine and Nicole Krier — to go up four points at the half.

Adams tightened the defensive reigns after halftime, as the Dragons (12-7, 9-4) only converted four field goals in the entire second half. After freshman Nicole Krier hit a short-range jumper with 7:12 left in the fourth quarter, which cut the deficit down to 27-25, the Dragons would not score again.

Lake Orion went 0-for-9 from the floor after that point with three turnovers, while Adams went on a 13-7 run in the third quarter on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor.

“I told the girls afterwards. You have to tip their hats to (Adams). They came out and hit shots,” said Lake Orion coach Steve Roberts. “We covered it pretty much for the first half. With their zone and traps (they shut us down). They came out in the second half, moved the ball, they found the shooter and knocked down shots.

“At times we had shots and they didn’t go in and they had some looks and at times they went in,” added Roberts. “I thought both teams played like champions. I was proud of my team. They fought through some adversity (all season with injuries) and played hard. They were in the league race going into tonight.”

A pair of free throws by Lauren Boyle and back-to-back 3-pointers from Karissa Roveda and Boyle gave Adams a 35-25 cushion with 5:16 still to play. The Highlanders were only 3-of-8 from the foul line and 0-for-3 from the floor after that point.

Boyle and Roveda each scored nine to lead a balanced effort for Adams, which had nine players score points and hold a 25-21 edge on the boards. The Highlanders finished the night 12-for-26 from the floor (46 percent) after attempting over 70 shots in a loss Saturday to Andover.

Krier scored nine and Secontine had nine with six rebounds for Lake Orion. Only four players scored points for the Dragons, who only attempted four free throws and shot 9-for-37 from the floor (24 percent).

“We switched it up a little bit,” said Scislowicz. “We went after (Secontine) and took her out a little bit and made someone else try to make some shots against us. We thought we played very good defensively. We didn’t give them very many second chance sot opportunities.”

The Highlanders’ title run came as a surprise to many inside the league.

“We were picked to finish fifth,” reminded Scislowicz. “Our leadership was the difference. That’s the thing with high school sports. We may not be the most talented, but the kids like each other. They have that family atmosphere and the seniors lead every day.”

FARMINGTON HILLS — Clarkston received quite a scare on Tuesday night.

In the end, the state-ranked Wolves were still able to clinch at least a tie for the OAA Red Division girls basketball championship.

Clarkston withstood host North Farmington’s late rally to post a 42-40 victory. Only a Clarkston loss Friday and an Auburn Hills Avondale win the same night can force a tie in the final standings. A Clarkston win Friday will give the Wolves (17-2, 11-2) the title outright.

Clarkston built a 25-16 lead at the half and held a 33-27 advantage entering the fourth stanza. North Farmington (10-9, 6-6) closed with a 13-9 run and nearly pulled off the upset.

Freshman Erika Davenport scored 14 points in the paint to lead Clarkston. Delaney Kenny added 10 points and Megan Hastings scored six for the Wolves, who were only 7-for-15 from the foul line. Hastings made 3-of-4 down the stretch from the charity stripe for Clarkston.

Jasmine Harris scored a game-high 16 points for North Farmington. Kaitlyn Kendall added eight points for the Raiders, who also shot just 7-for-15 from the line.

LAKE ORION — Breanne Watterworth said she didn’t eat her Wheaties on Tuesday morning. In fact, she doesn’t even like the cereal.

She didn’t do anything of super-relative nature during the day, either, except go to class and study for a large science project due Wednesday morning.

On the basketball court, the sophomore center from Lake Orion Baptist definitely played with the strength of the Lord and something of Superwoman status.

Watterworth, a 6-foot-2 post player, shattered the school’s single-game scoring record along with setting several other school and conference records, in leading the Lions to a 62-51 upset of visiting Midland Calvary Baptist in the final girls basketball game of the regular season for both teams.

Watterworth, who missed most of her freshman season with a broken wrist, finished with 51 points, 34 rebounds and eight blocked shots, while converting over 60 percent of her field goal attempts. She added three assists for good measure.

“My teammates played really hard and did a great job of passing me the ball,” said Watterworth. “I knew I was scoring a lot, but didn’t know I had that many points or rebounds until afterwards. I was just hitting my lay-ups and jumpers. Everything was just going in. We even scored a couple on fast breaks.”

Senior forward Jill Streetman added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Lions (4-10), who will face second-ranked Rochester Hills Christian in a second-round sectional game in the Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division I state tournament Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Clarkston Springfield Christian.

This night belonged to Watterworth, whose totals are also believed to be a conference record for the Fundamental Baptist Athletic Conference Red Division. Her totals for points, rebounds, field-goals made and field-goal-percentage in a single-contest are some of the highest totals in Oakland County history.

The younger sister of current Oakland University starter Bethany Watterworth, who led Lake Orion High School to the 2009 Class A Final Four and is an All-Summit League player in college, this Watterworth, the youngest of seven siblings, had her one shining moment in the sun.

Watterworth, who came in averaging 19 points, 19 rebounds and seven blocked shots an outing, converted 24 field goals, another school record, and made 3-of-6 free throws in the win. A total of 48 of her points came from the floor.

Watterworth held the previous school record for 22 rebounds set earlier in the year and had a previous career-best of 28 points in a contest last month, believed to be the previous second-best in school history.

She already owns the single-game school mark with 12 blocks in a game.

“I have never seen anything like it,” said Janet Noruk, who started the Lions’ girls basketball program in 2002-03 and grew up playing prep basketball in Texas. “How often does a girl score over 50 points in a game or how often does a girl grab over 30 rebounds? These have to be some records for schools in our league. I know they are, bar far, records for our school.”

The all-time state scoring mark for points in a game for all schools is by Danielle Bishop, who scored 72 points in a contest in 2003 for Laingsburg Christian before playing at the University of Toledo.

“I’m hoping she can do it again in the (state) tournament,” said Noruk, whose team has suffered several close losses. “We’ll need it against Rochester Hills, for sure, because they are a really good team.

“Our whole team played well against Calvary,” added Noruk, who noted the 62 points is one of the highest team totals in the 10-year history of the school. “It wasn’t just Breanne. We did a nice job as a team. This was one of our best games overall.”

AUBURN HILLS — The last time Auburn Hills Oakland Christian faced rival Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest, the Lancers failed to get the ball inside to Josh Peterson.

This time around Oakland Christian did not make the same mistake.

The Lancers went inside early-and-often to its post players, mainly the 6-foot-7 senior Peterson, en route to a 64-52 MIAC Blue Division victory over the visiting Crusaders.

Peterson finished with a game-high 21 points, making 8-of-14 shots in the paint, to go along with seven rebounds and six blocked shots in the victory.

Senior forward Nathan Piasecki added 14 points and 11 rebounds, senior forward Charles Hayden picked up 10 points and nine boards and freshman DJ Stevens supplied six points and six rebounds for the Lancers (13-4, 7-4).

Jon VanNoord was also 3-fo-6 from downtown off the bench for nine points for Oakland Christian.

“We transitioned a lot better. We did a good job running the offense and most importantly we got the ball inside early in the game and established the post,” offered Oakland Christian coach Dennis Hopkins, whose team has gone through some offensive struggles in the past months that has led to an uncharacteristic four league losses.

“We moved the basketball well and we got the ball inside, which is what we talked about before the game. The last time Josh Peterson didn’t touch the ball as much as he should,” continued Hopkins. “We had to do a better job of getting the ball inside to Josh. In our losses, he wasn’t touching the ball enough and we were settling for jump shots way too much.”

The smaller Crusaders, behind some quick guard play and the ability to crash the boards — Northwest held a 41-36 edge in rebounding — slowly clawed back and cut the deficit down to six points to 47-41 with 5:23 left in the game.

Lutheran Northwest again trimmed the game back down to a six-point deficit (53-47) with 1:48 to go on three free throws by junior guard Nathan Drews.

Each time, Oakland Christian’s Peterson and Paisecki had an answer. Piasecki and Peterson both scored six in the fourth quarter, where the Lancers held a 19-18 edge.

Oakland Christian outscored the Crusaders 11-5 after that point. The Lancers made 7 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter, including 7 of 10 inside the final two minutes.

“They just killed us inside,” said Northwest coach Dan Pontillo. We did a nice job coming back on them and we got a lot of and-ones, but we couldn’t stop them inside. They are too big. We did a nice job containing them the last time.”

Drews kept Oakland Christian honest and led Northwest with 22 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and three assists. He finished 13-for-13 from the foul line.

Senior Gurther Rashore added 11 points, junior Josh Morrison added eight points and six rebounds, and junior Evan Rouce supplied five points nine rebounds and three blocked shots off the bench for Northwest (9-7, 6-5).

Oakland Christian led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and 32-21 at the half.

“We have a lot o to work on before districts. I think we just need to concentrate on playing our style of basketball and not let the other team dictate,” said Hopkins. “We’re in a very tough district and we have to learn how to make other teams play our style, not the other way around. I think we did a better job of that tonight.”
