When Paula Bronsing graduated from Rochester hills Christian in 2000, never did she dream she would be the leader of her alma mater’s athletics department years later.
That become a reality last month.
Bronsing became the new athletics director at the small Baptist school in Rochester Hills, where she will oversee both the junior high and high school athletics teams.
Bronsing replaces Chuck Burch, who resigned from the school after being a teacher and boys soccer coach there for nearly 30 years. Burch was the A.D. from 1996-2010.
“I am looking forward to it,” said Bronsing. “It’s only going to be different than just coaching.”
Bronsing, who was Paula Boers in high school, was at three-sport standout at Rochester Hills Christian for three years, playing girls basketball, volleyball and girls soccer. She was an all-conference pick (Fundamental Baptist Athletic Conference) in all three sports.
Bronsing had moved to Michigan from Georgia in middle school and attended Troy Bethany Christian for most of her freshman year before transferring to Rochester Hills Christian.
She has served as the varsity girls basketball coach the past two seasons after being the junior high coach for two years. She will remain in charge of the girls basketball program, which posted its first winning season in many years this past winter.
Although the Eagles will continue to participate in the FBAC for league play and the Michigan Association of Christian Schools for the postseason, Bronsing has vowed to upgrading the school’s non-conference potion of its schedule in each of the six sports it offers.
Currently, the school participates in boys soccer, girls volleyball, boys basketball, girls basketball, girls soccer and baseball at the varsity level, plus some junior varsity and junior high teams in some of those sports.
“That’s one area I am really going to concentrate on. We need to play more games. I would like to bring the total closer 20 regular season games in (soccer and basketball) and to play in some (volleyball tournaments),” said Bronsing. “We sometimes don’t play very many games out of our league. We need to find some better competition.”
Currently, RHC competes in the Red Division of the FBAC, along with Troy Bethany Christian, Lake Orion Baptist, Clarkston Springfield Christian and Clinton Township Faith Christian. The FBAC Blue Division, which has Garden City United Christian, Kimball Baptist Christian, Wixom Christian, Ruby Faith Baptist, and Warren Antioch Baptist, but those schools only offer a few sports due to small enrollment.
The school is interested in picking up contest against Class D/Division 4 opponents. Interested schools can e-mail Bronsing at coach158@gmail.com
In other news in the athletics department, Jerry Slota will take over as the head boys soccer coach this August. Slota, who graduated from RHC in 1991, has been the girls soccer coach for several years and also was the junior high boys soccer coach under Burch for the past decade.
The school is looking to fill its varsity position for boys basketball as well.
